Glass Ocean Scene

Hello hello!

I recently went to a glass-slumping workshop with my family and friend at the Tacoma Glass Museum. We had access to a bunch of different colors of glass in various shapes and sizes, as well as glass grit or powder and some tiny little strands of glass. We could also ask the folks running the workshop to help cut pieces of glass into the shapes we drew on them with sharpies (the ink is burned off when the glass is heated). After we left, the glass professionals fused our art together and slumped it by placing it over a mold and letting it droop down into the shape of a small dish. I wish I’d had more time, but I’m still SO happy with how mine turned out!

Here’s what it looked like when I left it:

I just love how it looks in the sunlight and would love to make it into a sun catcher somehow. I was considering hot glueing a loop of wire onto the back to hang it from, but that could look really ugly seen through the glass, and I worry that the glue might fail and it could fall and break. :frowning: If anyone has any ideas about how to display this in the sun, let me know!

That looks wonderdul! You did such a great job on the design.

As for turning it into a suncatcher…could you make a wood frame to hold the edges firmly and add a loop to the frame? Maybe have something 3D printed to fit?

Hmm, I have a friend who’s good with wood; maybe I could commission something from him! Thanks for the idea! Still mulling a bit but might do that!

Maybe he could do something that looks like driftwood so it would go with the aesthetic really well!

Awesome idea!

That sounds like such a fun class! Your piece is whimsical and fun. I love seeing the before and after transformation!

Thanks! Yeah, it really transformed; when I finished, I thought it was kinda crude and childish, but once it’s fused, it just looks fun and cute to me!

Wow! This is so cool! I wish we had something like this near me. I love your design and the fishes eye is amazing. The eye just draws me in. So cool!

Your piece is lovely!!!

For display, what about a wire plate hanger? Or a plate display easel? Maybe placed near a window that lends a lot of light through the day, or a deep windowsill.

I’m not sure how I ended up with links to Michael’s Canadian website…

I have been wanting to see the glass museum. I live in south Washington, but my husband grew up in Tacoma and we head there every holiday. I had no idea they have these glass classes.

I really love your eel peeking around the coral.

Oh wow, thanks! That was speedy!

I’d heard of glad fusing, but not slumping! It was very fun! I love doing workshops for crafts I’ve never tried!

He hee, do you mean the little fish at the top or the eel’s eye? XD

And you never know; you could try googling glass workshops! I’m constantly surprised by all the things to do out there!

Ooooh this is another great idea! Thanks! And lol, the Canada site still shows me what you mean!

Thanks! I really love eels, especially morays!

The museum itself is apparently moving for renovations or something right now, so there wasn’t much on display when we went there, but we could go in the hot shop where they were demonstrating glass-blowing live, and I think they have a few different kinds of workshops you can sign up for in advance!

The eels. It turned out so perfect eith such expression!
