Happy Mail Craftalong 2025

You have my address and I am a huge art history junkie. I would love to get one of those in the mail!

I need to get back to sending out happy mail! And stock up on stamps again before they go even more bonkers expensive :joy:

I also want to get back into sending happy mail. I have plans to sit out on my new porch with a cold drink, addressing envelopes to all of you! I have so many cards now. Getting things in the mail besides junk mail would be a nice treat!

I would love that!

I’d be interested in getting cards in any language, really. I think it might even be fun getting postcards/cards in random languages and trying to decipher what language they are!

Languages in general fascinate me, so I am always up for learning something new and receiving something unique.

That gives me an idea to create some postcards based on the Portuguese word that cannot be translated: saudade.

Saudade is a noun that means the deep ache of missing something or someone. Nostalgia is not really a good substitute. The true meaning lies somewhere between nostalgia and a noun that would go along with the verb “to miss.”

Dutch has a perfect translation (no wonder, since we have similar languages): ‘tijdgeest’.

I love everything language related too.
Just let me know if you need my address (I’m in Belgium).

I want to get back into sending Happy Mail again too!
The last ones I sent out where Happy 2025 cards…

Because of the costs of stamps and of the cards with my own designs that I have printed by a third party, I will be sending out small batches at a time.

Yes it makes sense that you have a similar word. I guess the list I saw did not look to deeply into closely related languages.

My 2nd language is Norwegian and it occasionally surprises how similar some words are.

In English and Spanish the word means a deep longing. We just use the same word, suadade.

Tengo saudade del amor…

I do think Portuguese is much more passionate, though and very emotional when using the word…we probably use more familiar words like “I miss my husband”…

I think the fascinating part is that it’s a noun, so a single word can convey the feeling, versus in English, where you have to use a full sentence to convey the same meaning, because it only exists as a verb.

I can simply send my cousins the word “saudades” and it’s understood as a full sentence about me missing them.

There are also English expressions/idioms that have no easy translation into Portuguese, which is also so interesting to me. Like “to blow them out of water,” “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water,” and so many sports idioms.

Then there are those that exist as a literal translation but mean something else.

Like “to swallow/eat the frog” in Portuguese is equivalent to the English expression “bite the bullet” or 'hold your tongue." Versus the English meaning of getting the hardest task done first.

I could go on for days, lol! I love the intricacies of languages

I know idioms are the hardest things to learn in any language and they are more created by popular culture as well. I think one of the good things about the internet is that we can learn so much more and cross cultural communication is expanding!

We share a common love!

Yes, I love learning words in various languages!

And @wittychild , I agree with stocking up on stamps!
I keep wondering where my tipping point will be on “too expensive” to buy stamps…… maybe a dollar?
