Harlequin Cats

I designed and crocheted this blanket in mosaic overlay. I made it reversible, and I love how it turned out. It definitely gives me 60s atomic cat vibes.

Definitely 60s vibes…this is so cool! When you say ā€œoverlayā€, does that mean it’s two layers of crochet? (Excuse my naÄ«vete!)

In mosaic crochet, there are two methods used; overlay mosaic and inset mosaic. I’ve only attempted inset once and didn’t like that method as much. Overlay is by far my favorite method and overall way to crochet blankets.

So when you work in overlay mosaic, every row is worked in one color. In this case, one row was worked in black, the next row in white. There’s no changing colors mid-row. All single crochet stitches are worked in the back loop only (BLO), and all double crochet stitches are worked into the front loop left two rows down. This is what creates the image. I guess it’s called overlay because you’re working those double crochet over the top of the existing work? I’m not really sure

Because every row is worked in one color and you always work from the front, you have tails at both ends of the blanket. You can choose to leave them as fringe, or you can crochet an envelope border to hide the tails. This means little to no weaving in ends, and as I hate that part, I think that’s my favorite thing about overlay mosaic.

Thank you for the explanation! Such a great way to avoid weaving in ends later on, too. I’m honestly a bit slack-jawed imagining not having to do that!

Why aren’t we related? Your blankets are so amazing, then you added cats. LOL! Jealous of whomever snuggles in this.

Really striking pattern! It does sound handy to not have to weave in a million ends…
