I bookmarked it to try!
It’s one of those easy recipes that you can make your own. If you don’t like mustard, leave it out, and add a pinch more mayo or tahini if you need the moisture. I personally dislike celery in lunch salads, so I left it out, but if you like it, add it in!
Oh, tahini instead of mayo is a great sub! A little more citrus for that missing tang. I love celery. And pickles or olives for the capers. These are my faves:
Saw these Smash Tacos with lentils, and they look delicious. Might make me try lentils (yet again). I feel like the crispy texture of the tortilla might make up for my aversion to the texture of lentils.
Ooo…interesting! I love lentils and lentil tacos (and actually, so does Mr. Road!
). I should definitely try this!
Soo…I’m making my shopping list for next week and plan on trying these, but I’d call these quesadillas. What makes them “smash tacos?” Just curious! I was expecting some smashing in there somewhere, lol. I’m still going to try!
I like to use a bacon press on my quesadillas for extra crunch. I’ve never actually used the press for bacon. ![]()
I’m not sure why they’re called tacos. Maybe that the base of the filling is predominantly lentils rather than cheese?
Tacos in mexico are small soft tortillas with stuff on them, they’re served open and you pick them up & fold them yourself to eat them. Those crunchy formed shells are American. So these soft shelled tacos being folded & flattened is what makes them smashed I think. Still, really huge tortilla for a taco, definitely more quesadilla sized. Those aren’t folded though.
I’ll talk food with my Mexican co-worker next week and ask him more questions. We co-hosted a cinco de mayo happy hour at work last week & he told us all that isn’t a Mexican thing either!
Yes, I would call these American quesadillas, lol. I mean, I am American. We have a Mexican restaurant near us that does traditional quesadillas and it’s like a big soft taco. ![]()
Yes, Mexican Independence Day is actually Sept 16. We have been schooled on that by some friends, too.
Hm. Interesting point about the cheese ratio @MistressJennie.
We went out for Mexican last night. I had some lovely shrimp tacos but I couldn’t finish everything on the plate so I brought home the beans, rice and guacamole. Just made a lovely lunch of bean and cheese quesadillas, a Mexican spin on fried rice with some garlic, green onions, and egg, and a side salad of cucumber and tomato. Yay for getting a whole extra (vegetarian) meal for two people.
I love left overs like that! Restaurants always serve way more than I can eat, the kids are so happy to have not-my-cooking that it’s gone in a flash though.
I had to look up a bacon press but it’s pretty much what it sounds like. The ones with a smiling pig image on them are a bit morbid.
Doing a bit of research over here… It seems that smash tacos became a thing via TikTok, after the Smashburger crazy. I would bet Wicked Kitchen is just trying to make a nice vegan version of something making the rounds on social media.
Here’s a meat version…
I did look up smash tacos and saw the smash burger taco trend. I think “smash” makes sense there both because the burgers are “smashed” on the grill and they are named after the chain that popularized this method. That’s why I was expecting some smash action in the video, lol. Also, they are more taco shaped (by American standards). Either way I’m excited to try them. I just thought they were going to be something different based on the name. I’ve made something very similar to this many times, I just called it something else!
Language is so funny.
@Magpie - our bacon press totally has a smiling pig on it. It was a gift, but like I said, we have used it more for pressing tortillas and sandwiches than anything. (It’s great for grilled cheese!)
Smash is pretty trendy right now, I get it.
We’re going to try these very strange looking lentil patties that include banana, how weird is that? I really hate banana but I’m hoping that flavour will be undetectable.
I had never even heard of a bacon press! But it looks convenient. Quesadilla’s, tortilla’s, grilled cheese sandwiches, we just all put them on our electric press grill. Same idea. That was a gift as well but seriously one of the best we ever had.
Yes! It really kicks the crisp level up a notch!
Banana with lentils is super interesting @Magpie. I must know how it tastes, lol.
Hmmm… why not just make Smash Tacos (or burgers) with a panini press?
Inspired by @MistressJennie, I made a chickpea salad sandwich today. It was soo good and a nice change from salad.
I mostly used this recipe:
Ha! I also made chickpea salad sandwiches today!
I knew I felt a disturbance in the Force (the good kind). ![]()
