Home decor and renovation craftalong

Slow and steady progress on my Big Built-in Bookcase Project. I’ve build the first three “cases” (of five) and set them on their platform! I’ve measured so I can confidently make the last 2 the correct size to fit the space.

After I get those two made, I’ll get these all attached to the wall and each other, then focus on trimming them out and cutting the shelves. After that staining. Of course getting that last course of flooring in will be a part of the process, too.

It’s supposed to be dry and sunny for 3 days after today, so that will help make it easier to spend time in the unheated shop. Hopefully by the end of the weekend I’ll be most of the way to done on the last two cases.

Is it too early for me to be jealous? Those are going to be so nice!

Aw, thank you! It’s been a nerve-wracking project, but the more I accomplish, the more excited I am about it. TheMisterT has been (understandably) irked that 70% of our books have been boxed up for a few years while I procrastinated and now that it’s really underway he’s offered to purge his mighty book collection. We’ll have much more room for “objets”! I will go through my books, too, but I have done that regularly over the years anyway.

What a wonderful job you are doing! You should be proud of what you have done so far and the meticulous planning you have done to make these perfect for your home!

Awww, thank you! I am pretty proud of my progress so far. I’ve already tried new things and learned from mistakes.

Looking great, you will have so much storage after you are done.
We ordered cabinets today for the other half of our kitchen. We can match the style after 20 years, but cannot match the stain color. The old cabinets need some work anyway, wear around the handles and such. So see what I get to sand, stain, and clear coat. The refrigerator is moving, and we are reusing the upper cabinets in the new location.
I did discover today that I can order the stain the manufacturer uses on the new cabinets. So I have a month to get these old ones refinished. Fun!
We are doing this on a rather tight budget, but electrical, installation and new cabinets are so expensive these days. These will not be high end cabinets. Other quotes we got were double and no one can match our current style. Well, we are in the middle of it now.

It’s a lot of work to refinish them all, but I bet it will look so nice when everything is done. The old cupboards will be like new again and they will match the new ones perfectly.

@TheMistressT - how exciting! You’re really cooking on those built-ins. They’re going to be amazing when you’re all done. And, you got your DH to declutter books?!

@marionberries - I hope all the refinishing goes smoothly. It’ll be such a nice update to your kitchen. It’s a nice style of cabinet already, it’s great you could at least match the style. (I’ve always thought refinished cabinets with new pulls made a kitchen look just as new and fresh as a full remodel.)

I keep trying to close the door on the open cabinet. Every single time I walk by. When my dad remodeled the kitchen in the mid 60s, he built beautiful cabinets and my mom finished them. We were well trained to never, ever, ever leave a cabinet open. It has become embeded in me. I will close a cabinet even if I will need to get something else out in a few minutes. I close cabi ets right behind my DW, even if she is not done. I guess if I have to have a compulsive habit, this isn’t the worst, but it’s making me laugh right now.

That’s hilarious! You and my DH have this in common. I, on the other hand, am a chaos goblin and leave them open more often than not. My record is seven open doors/drawers at once when I was not actively using the room, lol. I do try to remember to close them… He was adamant that we have no open shelves or glass-front cabinets in the kitchen remodel (which was fine by me, anyway).

My bathroom is functional!!! I do need to buy a few things this weekend…mirror, towel rack/ring/hook, TP holder, drawer pulls. But, done! This bathtub was out of order for an embarrassing 6+ years.

I think someone asked what’s on top of the ladder in my room… well, that’s the attic! And I spent most of the day setting things up. That’s the best part - setting up a space according to plan, with things you already have.

We used to have an inacessible attic, there was no hutch. The hutch and a little window were in the 1947 plan, maybe someone removed it at some point. The floor was built sturdy enough that it was clearly meant to be a useable space. Those unfinished attics must have been really cold. Maybe that’s why it was closed up at some point.

Unfinished, the space is around 6ft high at the highest point, but finished it’s a lot smaller.

View from the top of the ladder

Lamp by @myrthena and cabinets by my grandpa. In my grandparents’ house, these cabinets hung over the washing machine and there’s still a faint smell of washing powder lol. It’s full of quilts and bed linen now.

Through the little door is the technical space with the hot water heater and the solar thingy. It’s insulated but otherwise unfinished.

Yay, working bathroom again!! After 6 years you’ve deserved a bath! I have a weakness for bathrooms in bright colours and this is no exception. I also really like the lights above the future mirror.

When I was a decorative painter I had a former colleague who was also a decorative painter, so in a sense we remained colleagues and also became great friends. When she had her first big cabinet glazing job she told me that her clients were “cabinet open people” and I had never heard of such a person! Now I am married to one. I don’t get in there to “deal with the situation” while he’s cooking unless it is an upper cabinet beside an entry point. Then I silently curse generations of his family (on both sides), because I have hit my head and face more than once on those. We use the space under the stairs as a walk-in-ish pantry and when I got back from a week away in Feb he said how he luxuriated (my term) in leaving the pantry doors open the whole time I was away.

@tendstowardschaos Your bathroom looks so good! I hope you find all the hardware, etc. you want for it this weekend and can put a bow on this room.

It must be nice to have that little space up there finally easily accessible!

How nice to have a finished attic space!

I had no idea that was a thing until reading this thread!

We have 3 small open shelves in the kitch and they are junk grabbers. And the dust and cooking grease build up. So NO open shelving for us.

Nice attic space! Will you use it for storage of more crafting stuff?

Everyone’s sprucing up their homes…so nice to see!

We’ll mostly use it as an extra guest bed, I think. At least, for young, fit and sober guests. Our sofa in the living room can be pulled out as a bed, too, but it’s not a very private space. We have people over more than most people, and many are musicians who are used to sleeping in the back of their van or in a tent, so I think they will be more than happy to use this little room. My plan is to also use it as a little reading nook, as it’s above my craft room. In winter it’s the warmest space in the house.

Right? We’re stuck with a goodly amount of open shelving in our kitchen. For various reasons, we really can’t replace it with standard uppers, at least not unless it’s a part of a much more extensive remodel. I pretty much hate them, but it is what it is and we have what we have. The grease situation has been much better since we were able to add ventilation when we got the new stove.
