This looks great! Really simple. Ours has way more buttons and hoses and other things we didn’t manage to figure out (a Graco, which is apparantly a good brand).

I think Graco is a good brand! This one was only $40 at Amazon (the Graco’s are way more expensive) but has like 5000 reviews so hoping it works. But if not we’re not out a lot.

It’s too good for us, way too complicated :joy: I’d be interested to hear how this works out for you guys, maybe we should get something this simple, too.

@photojenn Oh! I always recommend priming unpainted surfaces before painting, I forgot to say that. It can feel like a hassle, but it really improves both the look and the durability. It also will show you where filling and sanding have been missed.

@Immaculata I wouldn’t call myself an experienced woodworker! Lots of DIY, not that much woodworking and certainly not this kind. But I am flattered by your description! That is one reason it is taking so long, but also I am managing my anxiety about it by allowing myself shorter work sessions. And a lot of the time delay is waiting for materials, mistakes in the orders, and general life stuff. All that said, I don’t trust that the bookcases these people are building in a weekend are something an average person with average type and quality tools, in a typical workspace, etc. is going to come together in a weekend and be a quality piece. f

I was looking at a “one coat” paint that says it has paint and primer in it (assuming we will need 2 coats anyway). Do you think that would work or will I be happier in the long run if I get a dedicated primer first? I know nothing about furniture painting

I have never trusted those primer-and-paint-in-one products, but that said I have never used them either. It just seems weird that the important qualities in a primer would just have already been included in paint if there were going to work as well as possible. Ditto for the paint qualities as part of primer. You are a careful adult using these in a non aggressive way, so it’s not like you need them to have the most durable and wipeable surfaces, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

You’re probably right that priming first is the right call, I was just being lazy lol. Primer is cheaper than paint so as an added bonus if we prime maybe we won’t need to use as much paint.

All that is true! Not speaking to the lazy part, of course!

I absolutely love the new paints that are self-leveling and have the primer built in. I have talked to many professional painters that have practically changed to that paint even if it is way more expensive. I just bought a quart for a little over $40. It will be enough to do 4 cabinets. The biggest issue is that you can’t mess with it by trying to get out the brush strokes. The first coat looks horrid but the second coat is great. There is also no prep except to clean…no sanding needed.

My sister has used this on countertops, vanities, and even tile with great results.

My entire house and shed was painted with this…brick, metal siding and wood.

@AIMR That’s good to hear about the newer versions of these paints.

Well, my plans for woodworking yesterday were thrown off by 1) the last 1x3 board, the one that would be the right side “exterior vertical trim” piece was split and not useable and 2) the special saw I ordered for cutting flush the pegs that cover the screws is not actually due until next Friday. I sent an email to my contact at the lumber yard about ordering a new 1x3 piece, if he is on his usual schedule, he should see it on Monday. When I ordered the saw, I misread the pick-up date as this last Friday. D’oh! And sigh. With any luck, both of the pieces I need will arrive at the lumber yard this week and I can have them delivered this week, as well.

Y’all are being so productive and it’s making me feel better about working in this absolutely stifling heat. At least I’m not alone in my sweaty effort? lol. Hope we don’t need an emergency shelter here, eek! The crawl space is a scary area for sure. Fingers crossed it doesn’t get too stormy here but oh my gosh, it is so freaking hot right now. We’re still knocking down walls, haulin’ stuff to the dump and making amazing progress despite the heat. It’s about all I have any time for but thought I’d check in on the rest of you toolie sisters & say hey! Book shelves & paper shelves are looking amazing! TTC so sorry to hear about your snafu, frustrating when you are so close to being finished that incredible project. Carol, wow. Hard work paying off.
Here’s our latest progress , really opened up the space! I’ve lived in apartments smaller than this room .

We did take a break today to go and pick up something amazing. Rob found this for me online, he knows I regret giving up the one I had after design college and when he saw it he immediately said let’s go get it! So we did.

@TheMistressT You have been so patient with just trying to get the materials you need to complete your projects. I am still in awe of your construction knowledge! As I am typing, this awesome woman in short shorts and turquoise hair in using a chainsaw to cut down some huge stones to use on my stairs. She is also amazing!

@Magpie We have all missed you! My sister is visiting and we were just talking about you. I showed her all the renovations you have been working on. She said I have impressive friends here…of course, I do! Looking good!!! (Can’t even say how envious I am of that sewing machine!)

How awesome is that machine?! You guys are really making great progress in your space!

Lol, our cabinets…the gift that keeps on giving. Our builder got them fixed and they looked perfect, absolutely perfect…until the ride over here and they got scuffed by the FABRIC he laid between them. He is having the damnedest luck with them. So, he’s repainting this afternoon. I should ask Saint Jude (patron saint of lost causes) for some prayers, lol.

The countertops are in, though! They look awesome. But my house smelled like a nail salon blew up for a bit.

Everything looks so nice and yummy!

Our cabinet doors are in and should be delivered today or tomorrow. Soon I can stop trying to close non-existent doors!

Looking good! Thanks for posting your dark brown vanity! My main bath has beautiful cabinetry but it is very light wood. I want to paint it a very rich brown but was questioning my choice…I am not wrong…it is lovely with the blue!

Our garage door opener bit the dust today while my husband was trying to bring in groceries. He got conked on the head and has a nasty bruise. Poor guy just can’t get a break and now wants to move back South. Anyway, the new garage door and construction is scheduled for July 14th so the timing was not as bad as it could have been.

The landscaping for the side and back yards have also begun…I am on the hunt for deer resistent plants…they have chewed down almost all of the hostas that were in the existing beds from the previous owners.
