Aw, thanks! I am starting to feel more inclined to not DIY certain things. My hope is that the next time we need to deal with a dishwasher, I will be “too old” to do it or “old enough” to feel totally justified in hiring it out. It’s one thing to crawl around on the floor and totally another to try to work inside the cabinet under the sink. Blech.
We are at that stage…I don’t even want to move the trash bins to the front…I hire out anything I can…I wish I could hire someone to exercise for me…
After the last time Mr. Road did our roof he said “never again.” There are some things it is worth it to pay someone to do. No shame!!
Congrats on the new install!
For sure, no shame! We hope to rebuild and expand our deck next year. I have already made it clear that the under parts will be done by a pro. I will do the top and rails, but not that difficult stuff.
We had planned to do more DIY in our house, but then we figured out it would never happen. So we hired the big things out, this way, we could tackle them all together instead of one by one. Even the things that we had the DIY skills for, that we could have done ourselves. The only thing we’re doing ourselves is the finishing.
But from now on, we’re planning to do everything ourselves. Well, maybe not replacing the roof, but we hope to have no work on that for the next 30 years.
Does anyone have experience with thermally treated wood siding? It doesn’t require maintenance but to keep the colour you can oil it, and we’re planning to tackle that project in spring.
My contractor friend is supposed to be over today to fix two electrical outlets one of which is
.
.
… inside a cabinet
… under the sink!!
It should never have been placed there- it’s the outlet for the washing machine - it’s just a standard outlet, but it should have been place higher on the wall and not in the cabinet!
I have to have a padded cushion to even get down to that level and probably assistance to get back up!! I just can’t do that anymore!
The things people do. Our spare bedroom had the light switch for the room…inside the closet! They built this very ugly closet over the switch. We fixed that by tearing out the closet. It’s not officially a bedroom with no storage, but we will fix that when we sell.
Yes, lots of strange things like that happen in construction!!
One of the strange things in my home was having a ceiling light in the corner of my bedroom that had a pull string to turn it on - but I do know they were rushing to get the house completed - the husband was dying of cancer and they wanted to be able to spend at least some time in the house.
The location for the washing machine outlet - I don’t know what the code would have been back then (early 70s) I just know I find it foolish now!
The goofiest thing we saw when we were buying a house in PA was a wrap around bar in the basement…with no way to get behind the bar except to climb over it! Someone was either very limber and energetic, or just not thinking! Plus, it was carpeted all around with brown shag carpeting…
A friend of mine lived in a newly renovated apartment in Baltimore where a smoke detector started doing the low battery beep-- from inside the wall, where they had drywalled over it.
Sounds like a modern update of an Edgar Allen Poe story!! lol!!
And the bathroom light switch was next to the shower, several steps inside the bathroom. No outlets either.
But the pink and blue sponge painted walls really set it all off.
What’s strange about that? How else are you going to be able to plug it in? It makes sense in the picture in my head at least
@marionberries Don’t people there bring their own furniture when they move? I think very few people here would be happy with built-in cupboards.
Real estate cannot call a room a bedroom without a built in closet in the USA. Some closets are as big as some bedrooms. Some are lighted, some are not. My sister’s closet has a window and heated floors as well…built in closets are definitely a thing here.
Old New England capes of the '50s era were built with closets about the width of a regular door. We have three closets downstairs of that size. We knocked one ugly awkward-sized 60s/70s era closet out when we moved in.
And the upstairs was often unfinished. Hence the home-built closets. We have strange closets in our bedroom too…very inefficient closets. So yes, we will have to build a closet, or stick in a wardrobe and frame it to look like a closet before selling the house. For now, we are OK with the extra space. It’s the foster kitten room/guest room.
Outlets for washer and dryers are generally higher on the wall and not inside some cabinet.
A hole had to be cut into the side of the sink cabinet in order for the washing machine cord to get to the outlet. Also with the pipes for the sink/water under the sink - it makes having the outlet in there difficult to reach and possibly in danger of being exposed to water.
In my head the washing machine would also be in the cabinet, neatly built in. If the machine isn’t in the cabinet it wouldn’t work obviously!
So, I’m not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but some of the wallpaper that was replaced because of that printing mistake… ended up having the same mistake so we contacted the shop again and it looks like the wallpaper company sent new rolls from the same batch and possibly the whole batch was bad.
Earlier this week, the lady from the shop came by and picked up all the new wallpaper to send back. They’re very helpful and very friendly but of course they are dependent on the wallpaper company. We went by the shop yesterday and they hadn’t heard back from them. Apparantly as it’s a small company they don’t print batches very often. But if this whole batch was ruined (the patterns don’t line up and in some places there are white dots) then I suppose all customers are sending it back and they should print a new batch soon.
In the mean time, we are absolutely not going to be able to meet our goal of finishing the living room in October. And with the whole house stacked full of stuff that came from the living room, I don’t really feel like starting on another room in the house and creating more mess either. Maybe a little project like painting the ceilings in the bathroom and the downstairs toilet.
Hope the wallpaper problem will be resolved soon so you can finish your living room!!
I have been chipping away at getting the craft room cleaned up. I am a messy, messy crafter, often with more than just one or 2 projects underway and sometimes those projects utilize materials and tools from various stashes. Then I often don’t really tidy or restash as I go. Soooooo, this is a big project - at least partly, if not mostly, because I want to organize as I go and not just stuff things into totes and bins. Annnnnnyway, all this is so I an get those bookshelves started and to a certain point by the time we have TheMister’s family here for early Thanksgiving and filling that room with blowup beds! We got weird, early snow last week that is still on the ground which has helped keep me inside to work on that. We often get snow in October, but not the kind that stays around for more than several hours or builds up at all. There was 6" in some places around our property!
