Excellent score on your new oven AntBee!
We use the broken microwave above the (broken) oven as a bread box, but call it the “dog proof container”.
Congrats on the new to you stove!!
Thanks guys! I had heard that people use contact paper/vinyl type stuff. I’m going to look into that. I have some concerns about how it will fare against the heat and humidity of cooking below it. If all else fails maybe some wacky “eccentric” paint job could pass as “intentionally whimsical” hahaha
Happy annistoviversary!
My friend lived in a rental with a very ugly kitchen and we covered it in vinyl. She lived there for a few years and it looked okay until the end (and much better than what was under the vinyl but the landlord still made us remove it). As far as I remember it was fairly cheap so in the worst case you’d have to replace it in a few years.
Alternatively, do you know what’s behind the microwave? If the appliance is set in a cupboard you could just remove it and you’d have an open shelf.
We didn’t finish everything we wanted to do but we worked hard this weekend:
We didn’t get the bedroom finished but we also did a million little jobs around the house. So I’m happy and tired!
OMG that looks soooo cooool! What fun and funky wallpaper!
I have read the weather conditions under which I am not to use the stain I bought for the ledger boards on the deck and there’s not mention of too hot! Just keep out of direct sunlight. So, I can set up saw horses in the shop and get them stained tomorrow after they’re delivered (tomorrow, hopefully) and install them first thing the next morning. WOO! I was considering getting up at 4:00 am to apply the stain.
I’m so relieved it turned out so nice! We weren’t sure about the ceiling colour and considered a lighter shade of yellow, we were afraid this shade was going to be “too much”. But now we’re (almost) done I’m sure we made the right decision. We’re learning that “safe bets” are not for us. Go big or go home! No offence meant to people who prefer other styles - you do you! In an ideal world everyone’s home is a space they feel happy in. But we are the kind of people who need to really commit to an idea.
And great that you don’t have to get up at 4am! We painted all our trim on saw horses in our bedroom because that was the only area that had both A/C and (just) enough space.
So cheerful and retro cool - it looks fab!!
@Immaculata At least with paint changing your mind isn’t that big of a deal. Yes, it’s work and paint still costs money, but one of the less costly, most DIY-friendly changes one can make. So go for bold, because often you can undo it! If that’s your thing, of course. I almost think that with that wallpaper, going with a tamer paint color would have looked like you’d scared yourselves.
Still in a heatwave here, but I did manage to spend the morning out in the shop moving around some stuff so I could store the plywood for the upcoming bookshelves in a better spot. This allowed me to find my fancy gel kneepads (that are 13 years old, so I hope still are good) and some painting tools. Then I used the UTV to bring a bunch of stuff - including several heavy things - over to the “jobsite” for the deck: compound miter saw, two ladders, lumber support thingie, etc. Then I set up a work station for the miter saw and stashed my other stuff near by. I researched applying the butyl tape to my joists, too. Then I shopped a bit online for new exterior lights for that area and did some plotting for a novelty throw pillow for out there.
I love the wallpaper/paint combo, @Immaculata! Very bold and fun.
Kitchen guy is coming tomorrow for our next remodel. I hope he has more ideas than I do. It’s not a very large or flexible space, but I hope we can make it work better.
Oooo! Exciting! I’ve become a big fan of pocket doors for their space saving attribute. That said, I don’t have any and maybe have only ever lived in one house with them.
It’s our most used entry point (from the garage, through the mud room). We get a lot of traffic through the kitchen…going outside, to the half bath, or downstairs. Gotta tweak the layout to eliminate bottlenecks as much as possible. Right now, everyone gets squeezed between the fridge and the kitchen counter peninsula (exactly opposite that door).
I like pocket doors.
We have 3 pocket doors in our home. One between the main bedroom’s bathroom double sink & bathtub area and the toilet, one between main bedroom and the laundry room, and one between the other bedrooms bathroom and a dressing room with sink. The last one is the only one that gets used regularly.
They seem so practical in so many situations. I think most of the time we don’t consider the space that a swinging door takes that limits us in smaller spaces. I think bathrooms are great places for them. When/if we’re able to remodel the bathroom situation upstairs with the bedrooms, I see a pocket door making a big difference. We just have to carefully plan for outlets and such.
Our builder and the cabinet guy were here today and now my head is swimming with ideas! We’re talking about extending a wall to make the kitchen an extra 16" longer (it’ll eat up just a bit of the wide dining room) moving the stovetop to the same wall as the sink (instead of opposite it), and eliminating the peninsula entirely. But, still keeping the double oven! Yay! Probably looking something like this:
Exciting!
I can highly recommend the double oven! We got it last year and have used it so much. We got the Samsung Dual Cook which takes up the same space as one regular oven. We lacked the space for a full-sized double oven.
We also have a double oven that fits the same space as a single oven, it’s wonderful!
@AntBee - congrats on the new-to-you stove!
@Immaculata - Love that funky wall job!
@TheMistressT - Hoping you got your delivery and were able to start staining!
@tendstowardschaos - how exciting! Can’t wait to see progress pics.
We had company over the weekend so we didn’t completely finish, but we started moving the kiddo up into the loft last night. All the big stuff is up there. He’s camping with friends this week, so final set up won’t be done until he’s back, but it’s pretty official. The stairs are 100% functional and wonderful. Still waiting on the railing, but other than that, they’re done! I haven’t taken pics yet because I want it to be done-done-done!
Next the girls get to pick out paint for their big move…
