I have an in-wall double right now. I was just hoping I could manage to keep it (well, not this particular oven, because it’s dying by inches) with all the changes. By extending the one wall, I can, and still have enough counter space.

I’ve been browsing paint colors and Houzz all afternoon.

@Abbeeroad Ack! That sounds exciting for everyone! How are you feeling about the girls’ potential paint choices? Young’uns often have bold color proclivities and parents sometimes would rather they had less bold proclivities.

TheMisterT considered the double-oven-in-the-space-of-a-single when he chose his new one last year. Instead he went with a warming drawer. I would have probably chosen double ovens, but he uses the heck out of that warming drawer. He LOVES to warm bowls for ramen and other soups. I would have never suspected!

When I called abour our delivery around 11:45 they said I was still on the schedule, but that a driver and a dispatcher had called in sick today, so… they’ll call if they can’t do it and reschedule for tomorrow. ARG! I mean it’s not the biggest of deals, but I’m about to crawl out of my skin pacing around waiting. The waiting isn’t the hardest part, it’s not knowing how long I am going have to wait.

Considering the current colors are pretty bold, we are ok with anything!

The inside of the closet is very red, too, lol.

Ugh. I’m sorry you are still waiting!!

Also, this sounds wonderful!

I’m excited to see what they choose! It’s awesome that you let them have the freedom to choose their room colors!

Just got the call: tomorrow, late morning for my delivery. &%^@$%^&)_@(&!* Generally, I am very accepting of the world not revolving around me, but sometimes couldn’t it just a little?

I thing that generally speaking, I could take or leave the warm bowls! That said, I can take or leave soup and he LOVES soup. Once was given the nickname “Soup” by a roommate.

Oldest picked a very nice gray for the loft this time.

I’m expecting pink and purple, but they usually surprise me!

I am crossing all my fingers for you for tomorrow!

Haha…that’s fantastic.

Well, my parents didn’t let me pick the colours for my own room and look where that got me  I’ve already bought the paint for my craft room, my mum went with me, and she couldn’t believe I picked little-girl colours and not an adult colour. I picked a nice light pink and a shade of raspberry sorbet ice cream that I think I saw in pictures of @MistressJennie 's house first.

I can’t really blame my parents though, who knows, if they’d let me experiment with colours my style would be even bolder. But we’ve both never lived anywhere that we could really make our own and that’s why feeling at home is so important to us now.

We have curtains in the living room now, by the way. And they’re nice and heavy and velvet-y and they look fancy. And when I close them it’s so dark inside it’s almost impossible to take pictures…

@Abbeeroad I’m waiting to hear (and see) their choices, like I was waiting for the 2nd half of the 3rd season of Bridgerton!

@Immaculata I only kind of got to choose colors. I did get to choose the Duran Duran posters on my walls!

No decking today, but I did get out there and do about half of the butyl tape on the joists! Satisfying, but oof, it’s hot.

Can you cook a whole turkey in it?

This house had a double oven when I moved in, but since there was just me both ovens never saw much use. We still had the double ovens by the time Jack and then Jackson came along. I think the only use both got was when we would make scrabble. Except that they were showing their age, they still worked well.

Eventually we did some renovations on the kitchen (the best of which was eliminating the drop ceiling and the huge exhaust hood that had been over the island stove top. At that time we got a single oven with a microwave above. They were supposed to be good, but I had to repair the oven a few times and the microwave interior deteriorated.

We still have those, but the oven doesn’t work (I’m just not going to fix it again) and that microwave is the “dog proof container”. Eventually I would like to replace the oven with something that actually works.

When my oldest nieces were allowed to choose the color for their room when they were young, they chose a bold purple!

@Harlan I’m not sure what size turkeys are in the US (everything is bigger there, they say!). But this Christmas, we managed to cook a 3,5 kilo / 7-8 lbs turkey in the lower oven while we cooked potatoes and veggies in the upper oven. If you need even more space, you can always take out the divider to get one big oven, but for Christmas dinners I think it’s ideal that you can use two ovens at two different temperatures at the same time.

I’m not going to be able to get a better picture than this. I might take them off and change the size of the pleats in the future, but probably not anytime soon.

My grandma had curtains like this, but in red velvet. I loved them so much, I thought they looked so fancy, like in theaters on TV (I’d never been to a real one at that age). I also loved hiding behind them, and, oddly, smelling them. They got washed every year but they smelled very much like grandma’s house. And now I’ve got my own! I originally wanted them in the darker emerald colour in the wallpaper, but Mr. Imma strongly preferred the olive colour. I think he was right!

Another story from the same grandma - in WWII when fabric was scarce, they made clothes out of old curtains. There’s certainly enough fabric in mine for that, but let’s hope we’ll never experience those dark days again.

They’re lovely! I like the color, too.

We got the kitchen plan from the cabinet guy, and it’s awesome. I lose a bit of counter space, but gain some storage and loads of room to move freely.

Sounds like a very useful oven!! Our turkeys do tend to be larger than that, but it’s possible to split and flatten them. Because we only have a counter top over currently, we split a turkey in half for Thanksgiving. I took the other half out of the freezer and will be cooking it today!

Those curtains look great!! They should also be good at keeping the cold and the heat out!! I think the olive color was the best choice too!!
That’s wonderful that you have such memories of your grandmother!!

I’ve never cooked a turkey but as far as I can tell the one oven is full sized and the other oven is the size of what would normally be the warming drawer. But you’d probably have to look up the internal dimensions just to be sure.

I love your curtains, @Immaculata ! They must also be very insulating!

I need a huge oven to cook our turkey for the family Thanksgiving. We usually get about 28 pounds to feed 16 people or more. Our new gas range will fit the turkey and a couple of sides but we will have to practice time management to get everything done at the same time.

I imagine you already thought of this but just in case- my mom swears by using crockpots to keep the sides at temperature while juggling times for sides and main. She used to cook a sit down full thanksgiving dinner for 30. (She’s one of 7 siblings) and it was quite the feat to watch her orchestrate!

I do use my crockpots and ricecookers to keep veggies warm. We also invested in some food warming trays. With so many people, we have to set up a buffet style of serving the food. I am looking for a ginormous dining table as I promised the younger people that no one is going to have to sit at the “kids” table!

You can always go for the traditional Dutch Christmas meal: Gourmetten: A 'gezellige' evening of classic Dutch dining | DutchReview

Saves everybody a whole lot of work. A sit-down dinner for 30??? Your mother is a pro @AntBee .

@AIMR my grandma would put old doors on saw horses and put a nice tablecloth over them. It worked remarkably well. My grandparents had about 15 siblings between them, plus spouses, parents and kids, so their parties used to be huge.

My mom has my grandmother’s stand along roaster. It’s on it’s own card and everything, so it’s like a whole appliance just for roasting… mostly holiday turkeys! It’s so weird, but also so cool-looking. Like an aluminum version of those vintage, round-y refrigerators! Had my mom roasted a turkey or anything in it since she inherited it? I seriously doubt it. She has double ovens AND we have a small family since my grandparents are gone (and with them the awkward relationships with my step-grandfather’s kids and their families).

Holy outdoor living, Batman! The decking and some lumber arrived yesterday. I got the lumber stained and minimally installed on the edge of the deck with Eric’s help yesterday. The railing will be black powder-coated aluminum, so I figured a black stain was a good choice and one that didn’t require me to match undertones of brown or grey.

DeckBuildDay5-02

Today I put in about 8 HOT hours and there’s hardly any change that anyone would notice! I added joist tape to a few more spots and finished screwing the black board up. There’s so much getting up and down those ladders and it’s so time consuming. I did get 3+ courses of the decking on, though!

The first course was fiddly just in the process, plus it needed to be right, because every course after depends on it. Plus more of that up the ladder, do 4 screws or clips, down the ladder, move the ladder, repeat.

I think once there are 5 courses, I will be able to do a lot of the work from the surface which will hopefully make it go a bit faster. :crossed_fingers:

Yay!! I love the black stain. It looks great with the decking color. Woot for starting to get it down!!

That deck is going to be splendid!! I’m hoping that eventually we’ll be able to rebuild our deck, but not in the immediate future.

My mother-in-law was given one of those roasters. I don’t know if she ever actually used it. Takes up a lot of room for something that limited uses.

From the time my oldest brother got married, he and my sister-in-law did Thanksgiving for the family which kept growing and growing over the years. Everyone brought food (when I was old enough to contribute to that, I brought homemade bread one loaf of which would be dill for my mom) and a lot of us tried to help with the cleanup. Eventually it got to be too much and they opted for having us all meet up at Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth. The first year we met there was fine because we were in a side room and it was just the family. Later we were in the main dining hall which is long tables and terribly noisy. It was hard to talk to anyone except the few who were nearest to where ever you were sitting. Last years that we gathered, there were fewer of us and we were in a smaller room downstairs with round tables. That was an improvement! After that my brother retired and they moved up north so the BIG family Thanksgivings came to an end.
