Amazing!!
Turns out tiling a floor is more difficult than it seems, at least when the room and floor are very damaged and oddly shaped, and you’re working with leftover tiles. And I’d never worked with mortar before.
But for a first attempt, this doesn’t look too bad. Honestly, it’s the basement, as long as the tiles stick I’m happy (we’ll know that Wednesday night when it’s dry ). Then grout, sealant, and maybe paint the walls so it looks extra fresh.
We’ve got a window install date of the 16th pending weather
The cat litter sachets seem to be working for my neighbor’s mouse issue, at least temporarily. We’re now scheming how she can briefly “borrow” one of the free range neighborhood cats to really seal the deal.
My poor little closet is empty and getting ready for it’s makeover. 3’ by 6’ 8". Painting tomorrow.

It looks so much bigger now that it’s empty!
I made sure all of our closets were painted before we moved in. It is a royal pain to remove everything and most people never do it! That looks like a pretty full closet, so I know you worked hard! It will be nice to sort out things and organize the way you want once you get it painted. Can’t wait to see!
I am putting up some art work that I have received from various folks here! I have a lot! All in my craftroom so I can see them daily!
I know it’s just a matter of time until we have our first mice of the winter. UGH!
I got a pic of the finished deck stairs on Sunday, but what’s not in the shot is the doormat I found to knock the sand and small rocks off our shoes at the bottom of them, because I picked it up on Monday.
I love it!! Congrats on the big finish!
@AIMR - what an inspiring collection!
Thanks! I can’t wait to get all my hooplas up! I also have room for prayer flags and dotees!
Thank you! So dang glad it’s done. At least phases I & II.
So beautiful.
Hehe. Thank you!
There are more phases?! Does one involve the hot tub?
Oh, the hot tub is something we already had! It was put back on the new deck with help from a neighbor before I installed the railing. I did paint the cladding on it, though. And we’re hoping to get a new cover for it early next year. These are pictures of our neighbor helping us take it off the old deck. EEK!
The next phase is “skirting” it to cover the business underneath. I hope to have that figured out in time to do next summer.
It was so inspiring to see your HUGE project and what you accomplished! The skirting will be a breeze in comparison! Be sure to leave a way to get under the deck (we had one section that was like a little gate). Can’t tell you how many times we had to get under the deck to retrieve small things like keys, earrings, coins, etc! We even had a huge black snake that had to be relocated to the stump out back! Our landlord used lattice that was the same material as the deck that never needed painting.
We are not going to do a deck here…just a stone patio off the kitchen to the back yard. That is going to have to wait until summer or even fall!
Yup, I have plans for two large “doors,” one on each of the west and east sides. Under the deck is where the crawlspace access is located, and it is also a good place to store off season things. I also plan on having airflow and light penetration. We both kind of hate most lattice, so it’s more likely to be another material.
I don’t like lattice either…too many places to clean, holes for animals, etc. I am sure you will find something very nice to work with! Your deck is pretty high off the ground so all that space is fabulous!
We are going to have to eventually get a larger shed if we want to store outdoor furniture and stuff…our basement is being used by Jim for his music studio and drum room. The garage is being used by…our cars! ha ha ha
Back when I thought we’d to a “hog wire” style railing in black, I thought we’d do the square lattice in black vinyl. I don’t mind the square stuff, but the diagonal is so often of poor quality and so hard to maintain in wood and such unrealistic colors in vinyl that I tend to avoid it, even after seeing so many examples of nice looking lattice. Unfortunately, I did not communicate my plans well to the contractor who did the understructure. What is there is not ready to just attach stuff to, at least along the front, so I have to figure out how to build an additional structure onto it so I can then attach some… thing. Sigh.
I was working on the basement pantry last week (filled in the mouse tunnels with mesh, steelwool and mortar, put in floor tiles) but it wasn’t done by Sunday night. So all the contents of the pantry have been in the living room for a week. I hope this weekend it will get done - glueing the wall tiles today, and any tiles that didn’t properly stick last week, then grouting tomorrow night. Mr Imma can add the sealant when the grout is dry and then we can move the pantry back in! We took all the shelves off the wall and they had all been getting a little dirty so we’ll be giving everything a good clean before we move it back. The concrete floor was very dusty but with the new floor, that issue is solved.
Tiling was more difficult than I had expected, but maybe I had too high hopes - the floor in the basement was very low quality and odd shaped, and I’d never worked with mortar before which was the biggest challenge of all. I’m looking forward to glueing the wall tiles today because the walls are in much better shape and I bet glue is easier to work with than mortar.
