Excellent and subtle solution! You can always replace them with “fancier” ones later if you really want to since these things come in standard sizes. Someday we are hoping to replace our electric hot water heater with a propane on-demand hot water heater and I will need to figure out ventilation for the laundry room (where the HWH is). I am just not a fan of louvered doors. Your caning door has inspired me, but this is an option, too!
That is a very clever solution!
Pretty genius idea!
I think you have given me a possible solution to a similar problem I have with my mudroom door! I think it looks good and sure does beat louvered doors!
And its inexpensive!
Making progress on my floor!
Pre wax
Right after applying first layer of wax
The floor isn’t perfect, but we learned a lot. I would never have tried if I had to pay sticker price, but this leftover bit of flooring was cheaper than hardware store laminate. We had discoloured leftovers, so we used these for the landing floor. No pictures yet, but that one looks nicer because we’d gotten more experienced. We’re going to paint that floor, because of the discolouration.
So nice! I bet it feels great to have accomplished this!
Well done! I looks very nice! You sure got a lot of mileage out of your bargain find…wooden floors in the landing is a bonus!
It looks great! How awesome that you found such a great deal and you could do it all yourselves.
So warm and inviting. I love that floor.
We’ll be spending the weekend cleaning up, hanging curtains, and preparing to get back in our bedroom. The closet still needs the shelves and rail hung, but so does DS2’s closet…gotta wrap that up.
You and me both! My furniture and stuff are sitting in piles throughout the entire house. I can’t wait to put it all back in. I think your floor and walls go together so nicely!
It’s so nice to get to the end of a project! The roo. Looks so inviting.
We have half the kitchen cabinets sitting in our dining room…and it is going to get worse. I have to order the cabinets and find an installer.
@Immaculata - thank you! I am truly not looking forward to moving the furniture. It’s really heavy.
Thank you, @marionberries! It’s no fun losing your common areas to this endless shuffle of furniture. We have storage boxes, drop cloths, and partially dismantled furniture cluttering up ours. This, too, shall pass. I hope you can find a great installer, and quick!
Sometimes I think doing DIY is 20% actual DIY, 40% cleaning and 40% shuffling furniture back and forth.
Still have a ways to go before the exterior renovations are finished (painting begins in May!), but here are a few nighttime pics of my new retaining wall, sidewalk and front entranceway.
Ooh, nice lighting. Gives ambiance.
They were a luxury expense but we cut back on the number of railings we need for the stairs and gave up a custom mailbox surround. We had a lightpost in the yard that was ugly so we had it removed only to find out that we are required to have outside lighting in this development since there are no street lights! I love the capped lights along the walkway. They sit in a bed of river rock.
I think it’s really smart to have a light in each step to the front door! That really adds to the safety at night especially because there are no street lights.
We put some leftover bits of flooring on our (tiny) landing. Those are the discoloured parts, so we had planned to just paint them. But I’m not sure now, wouldn’t painting be a waste of this nice wood? Does the discolouration actually bother me?
I don’t mind the difference in coloring since wood is naturally varied in color anyway. And after a certain amount of wear, it might all blend anyway. Unless you just want a fun pop of color to make the landing a feature.
This type of wood (afzelia) naturally gets darker when exposed to sunlight, and they were stored in stacks, which is why the ends of the longest boards are darker. Only those were exposed to UV. We have very little daylight on the landing so it might take some time to blend in.
We had thought of painting the floor the same colour as the staircase, but mostly for practical reasons. It’s not like I spend any amount of time there. Mr. Imma doesn’t care either way, he hadn’t noticed the discolouration maybe I’m just going to wax the floor and be done, it’s much less work than painting and I already have the wax.
