I drink lots of coffee (decaf daily and 1/2 caff on weekends) and though I drink some of it black, I decided to try making my own creamer to cut costs. I started with this recipe at Groundabout: How to Make the Perfect Homemade Powdered Coffee Creamer
I used the recipe that suggests adding coconut oil because other recipes I viewed said it tasted best with it.
I added a cinnamon seasoning blend because I couldn’t get the vanilla powder that was suggested. I also added nutmeg. I added regular sugar because I didn’t take time to blend it to powdered, which another recipe suggested. I felt it would dissolve in my coffee as it does when I add a spoon of it.
It blended very well with my coffee. What was my overall experience with making my own coffee creamer? Will I do it again? Probably not.

Powdered milks would be too expensive because of how much creamer I would need to make.
-
I preferred vanilla powder flavoring but am not willing to pay $10 - $19 for it and my homemade creamer would have to be flavored.

The cinnamon seasoning mix that I used (which was my choice) seemed to hurt my stomach. When I eat something like cinnamon rolls or cinnamon dry cereal it doesn’t bother me. The problem might be in using the powdered cinnamon spice.

I compared the cost of making my own with the canisters of store brand, flavored creamers that I buy. There was no savings. The store brand was significantly cheaper, though I consume lots of it. I know that the manufactured creamer has ingredients that are not healthy but I don’t worry about what I can’t control. I gladly do what is reasonable for me in order to live a more healthy life. For the rest (stuff that is bad, unhealthy or dangerous for me), I live with it and enjoy life anyway.
As it is when we tinker around in the kitchen, it was great fun making my creamer. The coconut oil and nutmeg gave it a divine smell and I enjoyed storing it in the pretty, pressed-glass canning jar. Because of my stomach pains from the cinnamon mix, I mixed the rest of the creamer with some of my store-bought creamer to dilute it.
To further my healthful living regimen, I’m hoping to use less creamer and drink more black coffee and black coffee with sugar substitutes. Maybe I’ll get to the point where I will be buying creamers occasionally, for holidays, special events and seasonal. Taking long rests from using creamer will give a big boost to my healthy eating agenda. I’m trying to do that with ice cream.
Thanks for looking!
