An old memory just popped in my head that gave me the idea to see if anyone makes anything similar. Both me and my dad couldn’t stomach the bierocks my mom made (we had to leave the house when she made them, ). So one time she made some just for us without that…that stuff that should not be consumed. (Bad Harry Potter pun, ).
So what have any of ya’ll made?
These are ideas that popped in my head.
Pasta stuffed (lasagna, spaghetti, etc. Chicken, beef. White sauce, red sauce. Wrapped in an herbed dough). [Strombolis come to mind after I wrote all this. Just make them fairly small]
Cheeseburger (meat and cheese, very simple)
sheppard’s pie stuffed buns. (This would be a little difficult, but a paratha dough would probably be really good with this).
BBQ pulled pork. That wouldn’t be too difficult.
Chicken soup and sausage & gravy, stuffed inside of a buttermilk bread dough. (This would be made easier by freezing in muffin tins before rolling, at least for me).
Hmm! I bet adding corn to hot dogs and macaroni and cheese would be good.
Another thought that crossed my mind, they could be flattened, erm, about an inch, so they could be reheated from frozen quite easily. That’d make them a great prep food, snack. .
Also, this would be good for even my pains. After the meat is fried, I could easily take two days to make them. I wouldn’t have to push myself as with tamales or gorditas. (OOH! I just thought more about this. I could freeze hamburger, at least, and could take even longer to make them). (Ack! Even more came to mind. If I froze the sheppard’s pie insides in, let’s say large muffin tins, that would make it soooo much easier to roll the bread dough around them).
I hadn’t heard of bierocks before, but I just googled them.
In the Netherlands, we fill yeast dough buns with sausage meat, even simpler than hamburger and cheese. I’ve got a recipe for a vegetarian variety using spiced chickpeas that’s really good as well. I used to have a roommate who claimed to hate all vegetarian food but didn’t ask what was in it until he ate three (I didn’t trick him, he just started eating without asking).
And in Finland they eat Karelian pasties. Typically from rye dough but some are made from wheat dough, and filled with carrot and rice or mashed potato.
Just some random ideas because I know you’re an adventurous cook!
Ooh, that gives me an idea to try with hummus as well. , but I doubt I’d get some of the things I’d like to try (Eggplant, being one…, Though, I probably could with zucchini and bell peppers, I bet that’d go good with the hummus. I bet that’d be really good with a paratha style dough. Don’t know about naan…Will have to try a yogurt dough sometime. I often don’t get around to it before the yogurt spoils, )
I think hummus will probably taste nice but it might be a bit messy to eat? You might need a plate.
Another thing I just thought of is bakpao. It’s a Indonesian steamed bun, usually filled with spiced pork but you can get other fillings, such as shawarma or satay, as well as sweet varieties. I think you could put all of these fillings in a regular stuffed bun. (If you are curious what Dutch rap sounds like … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDFuVWSX9N8 there’s a famous song about the bakpao!).
Ooh! Once You Know This Recipe, You Will Be Addicted To Making It! custard cream steamed bun Ok, her egg separating dish and the sugar dish are just too cute, heh, but, butt but, she used cupcake papers for setting them on in the steamer. I never would have thought of that. Welp, put steamed buns back on the burner, because I could do that. (Remembering the last time I attempted them, oof, very messy).
:no _mouth:, yeah, you’re correct on that. A thin layer would be fine, but it’d be a lot easier to just dip it in hummus. Well, dip it into or spoon it onto, .

I think steamed buns can be found in almost all cultures in some forms. Of course, dim sum is very popular and can be filled with all sorts of meats, veggies, etc. I also love the mashed potato and carrot filling in samosas.
My mom used to make mochii dough and fill them red bean paste for a sweet treat or seasoned beef for a savory one.
We make a salmon and rice filling and fill dough and then shape it like a loaf. It has a fancy name, salmon coulibiac.
Beef wellington is a sort of stuffed bun, isn’t it?
Sounds yummy! I had also never heard of bierocks, but they sound good! I love cabbage. You could do a simple filling of yellow potato, butter and cheese. I get a peroshki with those fillings and it’s delicious.
I get steamed buns from an Asian grocery store nearby that has a great deli. My favorite are the Manapua which I think are an Hawaiian version of the Chinese buns.
I like the chicken with yellow curry, bbq pork and sweet potato.
Try googling pogaca recipes. That’s Turkish stuffed buns with a variety of fillings. Here’s some ideas.
I make them all the time with ground beef or cheese. They are great to take along on road trips.

Thanks for the link! It brought back some fond memories of my childhood in Ankara! Our housekeeper made these and gave us a money to buy smit from the street vendor.
Ooh! Definitely have some ideas. Erf! Even after I read “bagels” my mind began whirling with ideas, heh. Boil them for a few minutes on each side before baking to give them that bagel texture, .
Spine is not happy today, so…dependind on how long this lasts, I’ll start planning some things out. lots of ideas…looooots of idears,
