Ingredient List Labels for Potluck Dishes

This weekend there was a dept picnic/potluck hosted by one of TheMisterT’s reports. I usually make a dessert for these things and this year made blondies and brownies. We learned that one of his new report’s wife had a “serious tree nut allergy.” That scared the stuffing out of me!

I did what I could to check labels for my ingredients being “processed in facilities that also process…” but not all things have that info, especially ingredients purchased by-the-pound. I did choose treats w/o tree nuts as ingredients, of course. I figured this person knows how to take care in such situations and at least listing the ingredients would help them make decisions.

Anyway, I printed out the lists on cardstock and then used autumnal cardstock and dies to make these labels. They went into place card holders beside each plate of treats. It turns out her allergy is not deadly, but does seriously effect her for a few days and gets in the way of her working. WHEW! Another guest appreciated the list due to their self-proclaimed “pickiness” so there’s that.

I did not take pics of the treats, because as you can see the lighting situation is not great these days and almost no food looks yummy in crummy lighting.

These are so thoughtful and lovely!

Very thoughtful…I know a lot of people have to ask the hostess or whoever brought the dish about ingredients. This really will be helpful to those who are allergic…or just picky!

Thanks, pals!

@AIMR I have done this before when sending things with TheMisterT to his office (before WFH) because I wouldn’t be there to ask. This time I did it because I would never remember all the ingredients, especially when “put on the spot”! I think I will do it from now on.

You make it look so fancy and professional!
I love that it’s typed out so people aren’t guessing what you wrote. Handwriting can be tricky.

This is a great idea. I hate how at potlucks some people don’t even label what the dish even is. Sometimes it’s super hard to tell!

Thanks, everyone!

@gozer OMG. I can’t seem to hand write a few sentences w/o making a mistake, let alone the issue with handwriting! I’m glad I had the time to type it out - and have the spell-check on.

@Kwality570 Yes! Real life is sometimes just like food photography which frequently makes everything look like shiny, brown goop. Is it beans or chocolate?

Awesome. I know I often avoid baked goods because I never know if/how much dairy is in them. A regular chocolate chip cookie? Probably safe for me. But what if I discover (the hard way) they are made primarily from cream cheese with a dash of cocoa powder? Better safe than sorry. Very thoughtful of you dear!

Thank you! The feedback here has me convinced that I should do this from now on whenever possible.

Awwww. Thank you!

yeah and if I can’t tell what a dish is, I just pass.

Sometimes you gotta roll the dice for flavor.

Hahah! I had a coworker tell me that she put marshmallows in her cole slaw because that was a family recipe and was forever scarred by the weird concoctions some people eat. I’m an adventurous eater, but that was a bit over the line!

   I mean, I would try that, but I would hope people after their mid-20s would start recognizing what was “just them”!

That’s a really clever and considerate idea, and you made them look so beautiful!!

… ummm, I don’t even know what to say …

Awww, thank you!

Thank you for sharing! I always place menu cards/ ingredient tags for my home baked goods because I have a child that is allergic to the world

Let’s normalize labeling! I would feel terrible if someone either had a reaction to my food or missed out because they couldn’t be sure.
