This little gal is Jellaby. I made her as a template for a watercolor kit I’ll be offering in STS. I’m fascinated with the little watercolor kits I see in the Creative Re-Use store and I thought it’d be fun to make one of my own.
My sample was made with only the colors that will come in the kit, and no additional materials other than a paintbrush and water.
I started by searching through my liquid watercolors for a color combo I liked. While I have over 300 watercolors, most are pans and I need liquid watercolor to make the dot cards. Luckily I found some I was happy with in my stash.
Jellaby started as a sketch in my mini sketchbook:
Next I drew her on some 4x6 mixed media paper with a fine grain.
I should have done an ink outline, erased the pencil marks, and THEN scanned her. But no. So I spent some time cleaning up the image in photoshop and then dropped the opacity and printed four versions of her on watercolor paper.
Next I painted one of them so I’d have a good sample and took pictures throughout so I can make PDF instructions. There will be a simple version, intermediate (adding more detail and shadow), and I’d like to paint one more of the templates but using a tonal ink wash and liner pen as an underdrawing before adding watercolor as an example of advanced watercolor techniques.
