Jewelry Swap Items and Trying to Age Copper

In the Jewelry Swap, I made a necklace for @Rlynn and a pair of earrings for @saintcady

I tried to hit as many points from their questionairres as possible. The earrings are dangly, assymmetrical, contain nuts (the hardware kind), purple and black, and tarnished copper discs that I added after discovering that she too liked aged copper. The necklace is as unshiny as I could manage. I tried to age the silver bits but that did not work. The copper disc is attached to a backing made of recycled bicycle inner tube, sewn with purple beading thread. On the copper disc is a painted cicada which began as a failed engraving. (My wrist was ultimately not ready for engraving.)

A few more pics and then I’ll explain how I aged the copper…

So, I found a tutorial for a “patina” but it didn’t totally work. I soaked the copper discs in a mix of equal parts white vinegar and salt. Then I took them out after half an hour and let them sit for a few days…

I thought I took more pics of this process. The necklace disc went through twice and they initially had a lot of the blue patina but it came off when I waxed them. But it did take away the shiny and add some aging.

Thanks for looking! I had fun figuring out how to make these, even when things didn’t go as I’d hoped.

The “aged” copper is really cool even if it’s not what you envisioned. Both pieces are unique but I’m in love with the necklace. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Super, super cool.

I love aged copper, if you can get hold of some acetic acid (it’s v diluted in vinegar) it works even better
