I am not familiar with this Demon Hunter theme, but that cat creature you created is awesome! I wish I could have seen your Halloween display in my neighborhood! I love that it was not a typical Halloween theme and that your son helped. So fun!

What recipe did you use for your paper mache?

Thanks! It’s a mixture of toilet paper, water, wood glue and joint compound. I used a butter knife to smooth it on. It’s a variation on a recipe by Joni Good from Ultimate Paper Mache.

I think I was doing about 2.5 cups of damp toilet paper (soak in hot water then churn up with a crafts-only hand mixer, then sieve and gently press. But don’t remove ALL the water; it should still “flake” if you run you finger across it).

Then in a separate large bowl, mix about 3/4 cup of wood glue and about 2 cups of drywall joint compound (with the same crafts-only hand mixer). Then mix it all together and blend it up some more. I think I started out adding a little flour to that, but ended up leaving it out because it didn’t seem to make much of a difference.

Please watch the video I linked above if you want to try it. My brain doesn’t hold onto recipes very well, so the quantities I quoted above may be off a bit.

But the first step is to build the structure out of cardboard. Then I glued one or two layers of newspaper strips over that. Then used the paper mache clay recipe above to do the finishing coat and add a bit more detail. If you let it dry long enough, it dries rock hard.

I ran through almost a gallon of wood glue and a whole 12-lb bucket of joint compound.

I’ll bookmark the video. I’ve been wanting to try paper mache for a long time!

Maybe it will be my first project in 2026 lol
