K-POP Demon Hunters Halloween Theme

This year, my son and I worked together to do a K-POP Demon Hunters theme for our Halloween decor. The centerpiece was the paper mache blue tiger named Derpy, and his sidekick, the magpie named Sussie. I was excited that I was able to figure out how to make Derpy’s eyes light up!

Here are some photos, including a few progress shots.

We also created silhouettes of Huntrix in our front window. The lighting was layered, with changing colors and some motion effects.

Our treat containers looked like ramen and contained some Korean candies along with KPDH trading cards, stickers, and temporary tattoos. The wraps were Etsy digital file purchases, although my son had to make some changes to make them fit our specific containers.

My son dressed as Mystery from the Saja Boys, although he couldn’t stand the backwards purple wig for very long. I dressed as a fan: one of the 3 aunties.

We had fun, but disappointingly few trick-or-treaters. There were lots of trunk-or treat events this year, so maybe those cut into traditional trick-or-treat attendance. Just wanted to share!

You officially win Halloween! My daughter would have screamed herself silly when spotting your decorations and those ramen cups are too cute. I’m absolutely in awe of your Derpy & Sussy figure! Will you being putting it out next year?

Nope, we like a new theme every year. Sold it on Facebook Marketplace to help cover our costs.

That’s a great idea and I’m sure it’s super appreciated in its new home!

How much was Derpy to make roughly and how long did he take? Also, how did you do the eyes?

Your dispaly is so awesome I just want to wallow in the details for awhile. :joy:

The only things I know about K-POP Demon Hunters is the crafts posted here and I know these are AWESOME! You really made the most of the theme with your decorations and treat containers. Such great details!

Thanks @TheMistressT!

@Tapestry, the paper mache tiger + magpie cost roughly $130 to make (WAY more than I thought it would, of course!) The biggest costs were the paint and the paper mache materials (joint compound, wood glue, toilet paper, thrifted hand mixer & giant stainless steel bowl).

It’s hard to say how long it took. I started on the project in early October and did a little bit each day, with one marathon session of many, many hours as the deadline approached.

The eyes started as a huge globe-shaped plastic ornament — the kind that comes apart so you can put things inside. I glued the pupils in place (on the inside of the globes), then glued a couple of layers of yellow tissue paper over those (also on the inside), then painted the orange around the edges. They are sealed in place into the eye holes with red Model Magic.

A string of fairy lights makes them light up. The inside of the head is a cavern with foil at the back so the light is reflected forward. The string of lights is tied up into two bundles that hang from the top of the head, one behind each eye.

The battery compartment/on-off switch is hidden in one side of the mouth. To keep the light from shining out of the mouth, most of the mouth is covered with black Model Magic, with a wad of black cloth covering the switch access area.

Hope this makes sense! I really should have taken pictures of the inside of the head so you could have seen how it was set up.

That makes complete sense. Thank you for the details! My heart says “make something that awesome next year” and then my brain looks at derpy, looks at my pile of tiny canvases, back at derpy, back at the tiny canvases. Annnnnnd it seems unlikely.

:open_mouth: this is all amazing! Holy crap! That cat sculpture is perfect, honestly. I know that show is really popular right now so I’m sure some kids were excited! I haven’t even watched the show but I’m excited. And the fact that you made those treats! Seriously it’s all incredible.

Thanks! The girl that came dressed as the main character, Rumi, pretty much lost her mind with excitement and took many selfies. Another girl dressed as Wednesday Addams said she really preferred the demon boy band. (Yeah, makes sense!) But my favorite reaction was the little girl dressed as a fairy princess who kept hugging Derpy and refusing to leave our porch.

I actually had zero desire to see the film, then my son saw it and convinced me to give it a chance. It surprised me. Really enjoyed it!

That is so great. I bet it made it all worth it. I’m surprised I didn’t see any Wednesdays or demon hunters in my truck or treaters!

Truck or treat? Is that different from trunk or treat?

I really seriously thought there was an event in your town called “Truck or Treat”.

:joy: I mean it totally could be a thing. We have lots of trucks over here. We need trucks and SUVs for the snow, ya know? :joy: I’m trying to figure out how a pickup truck or treat would work. Like, climb up into the bed and it’s kinda like a mobile haunted house? That would be neat.

I know paper mache is a lot of work, but yours turned out to be really cool looking! You nailed the colors, the shape, and the eyes!

I love those ramen cups as well. A lot of thought went into your themed Halloween.

Yeah, I think events at churches and firehalls are replacing door-to-door trick or treating. We have a hilly subdivision, bad weather, and houses spaced out too far apart so we don’t get a lot of kids either. I am thinking of volunteering at the local fire hall event next year. They have decorations and prizes as well as snacks and candies for the kids. I just like seeing the costumes and the little kids.
