Large Stirring Mulberry Spatula

I royally messed up a jig I was making to help with the trains, so I changed to making this, heh.

Anyway, I realized while making the mochi that I didn’t have a large spatula for stirring things like that, so I made one, :grinning:

it can’t be seen, but there was a deep crack in this side, so it has a pretty deep well towards the handle. Meh, it’ll still suffice for my needs.

Here I used a machete that was left here when we moved in as a fro…frough…frow…not sure how to spell that, heh. (Been watching some vids of this Irish/Welsh kid that does woodworking, which gave me the idea).

And here is the block I had made from doing that.

And here is a simple method I used to clamp it down to thin it up some. (Mental note to self: Try to save up about $60 and fix this darn table…Yeesh! It’s so worn).

This spatula is quite pretty. The well looks like a feature, not a bug, too

One thing I’ve decided I’m going to do more often when I’m making utensils, I’m going to stop trying to make things uniform. I’ll just use splitting, and let the grain of the wood dictate the shape of the tool. Meh, it may have a lot of quirks, but I shouldn’t deny the wood those quirks because of my blasted OCD, heh.

I Ilike things more quirky and natural. The spatula looks so well crafted. The grain is beautiful.

When I get to expecting wood to be symmetrical or uniform, I tell myself “that’s what plastic is for.”

Lovely! This would make a great candy paddle for small batches, too.
