I was super excited to be selected for Twig + Tale Sew + Show to help showcase the endless possibilities of their Leaf Hip Pouch. I received the pattern for free but, I promise all opinions are my own.
I started off by making the medium size with the standard Kawakawa leaf. I went fully upcycled for the materials: the outer plaid came from a wool shirt I loved but couldn’t wear (way too itchy), the plum cotton was from a thrifted skirt that never fit, and the lining came from a dress at the end of its life. I skipped the inner pocket and button, knowing I wouldn’t use them. The result? A beautiful, functional little pouch that I’ve already worn multiple times, such a great alternative to pockets!
Next up was a version for Elliott, who chose the large size with the maple leaf flap, fitting since we live in Vermont, and what’s more Vermont than maple? We used black denim with red contrast stitching, and this time I included both the inside pocket and a button closure per Elliott’s request. The flap was a bit fiddly to cut out because of all the points, but sewing it up was smooth sailing once that was done. It turned out great!
For my third hip pouch, I made the small size with an oak leaf flap, 1.5-inch belt loops, and a button closure, but no inner pocket. Everything was upcycled: fabric from thrift store clothes, a button from my stash, and an acorn bell from my totally random supply of little treasures. I really like this size; it’s perfect for wandering around town or at fairs when all I need is a few essentials. My phone just fits inside, which is a nice bonus.
I already started collecting scrap fabric so that I can make more.
