I guess it’s not entirely accurate to call this a completed project but the cross stitch part is complete.
I remember seeing cross stitch on gingham when I was a kid and I may have done some cross stitching decades ago (I can’t remember ).
This started out as a project on Making Zen but, unsurprisingly, I ventured out from there. Before that, I had never heard of “chicken scratch” so I did some free ranging around the internet to see what tidbits I could find. I couldn’t find anything that was quite what I wanted or that made sense to me so I improvised.
Now I have this bit of embroidery to use for . . . something in the future.

Fantastic!
I heard of chicken scratch from the last Making Zen event. The gingham fabric makes it easy to create patterns. I remember using gingham to do smocking for dresses when I was younger. Are you on the FB page of Making Zen?
There are so many patterns and some are the exact ones used in sashiko as well, but this is easier. Have fun with it!
I did make the pin cushion from this year’s session:
That’s what I started out to do, too! But I got kind of carried away with the fun of chicken scratch
I am a slow crafter and it took me more than one audiobook to finish the stitching. So, I just now finished the pincushion. It ended up nestling down in the cup I used. I thought about putting some padding under it to raise it up but I actually like it this way. And, well, “nestling” seems appropriate.
