Manu Wall Tiles

I was hoping to make a few more of these native bird wall tiles for the Hawaii Island Festival of Birds, but it looks like I will only have some 'i’iwi and manu o kū ready on time!

I’m always telling myself I need to make more tiles, and then they take a while when I finally get to them, so I don’t end up with a lot at a time! :upside_down_face:

I like having something ceramic that doesn’t need to take up space on a shelf or other surface.

For these, I like to roll out a chunk of slab and cut it into rectangular-ish shapes before carving by hand. I add picture hanging wire after they’re done being fired.

For the color, I use underglaze on greenware, and then do a wash and wipe of black underglaze on the bisque before glazing. I also usually wax over the underglaze, just because I’ve come to like how they turn out that way!
These are all fired in a cone 10 gas reduction kiln at my community studio.
Thank you for looking!

Your work is so pretty and unique to you. If I saw these without your name on the post, I would still recognize that it was yours immediately.

These are so pretty and unique. Love the colors and style!

These are so beautiful. I especially love #2 and #3! I think your style is so great! And the way you do your glazing and stuff is magical.

Those are cool as hell. I really like those. Great job.

Like someone else said, your work definitely has a style, and a really appealing one at that. I love these little wall tiles and I think it is so smart of you to offer your artwork to people who don’t have a lot of horizontal display space!
