I created this octopus for @steiconi in the recent Ongoing Wish Swap. It’s 5x7 watercolor on hotpress cotton paper with white acrylic ink and watercolor pencil for accent.
It was my first time using a resist with watercolor and also the first time I’ve used a dip pen for accenting the finished piece. I’m a little in love with both techniques now!
I did an initial, light wash, let it dry, and then applied my resist to create the dappled effect on the octopus.
Absolutely amazing! I also love seeing the beautiful tool and the techniques you used. There’s something so fascinating about resist style art, whether it’s on paper or fabric or canvas… Your octopus has such a real and dreamy sense of movement and occupying the space. His little sucker details are just glorious!
This is so beautiful! Nice use of the frisket. (I just can’t seem to get that stuff to work for me, hahaha!)
Also YAY DIP PENS! Did you end up using the glass one with watercolor, or other ink? (I only ask because sometimes I’ve used “normal” dip pens for fine lines with watercolor, but I’m not sure if the glass one would work well for it?)
@steiconi - i hope you had good luck with your frame shopping!
@Mountains_and_Clouds - thank you! I had two bottles of resist, one was so old I had to toss it. The other was just barely usable, thankfully. I had no idea you can use dip pens with watercolor! Definitely trying that! I used the glass one with acrylic ink and it worked perfectly.
