Firstly, I love this, really cute and tiny 
Secondly, I thought it was something they did use, pre computer era of course, at least the article I read from an old cop a while back said they did use them, BUUUT it was rarely of course because of many reasons (space, most cases were smaller, and other reasons I can’t remember). So yeah, nowadays it’s more just a Hollywood thing XD
