What started as a fun little caviar stocking stuffer for TheMisterT has turned into a full-on Caviar Experience gift.
I looked into serving caviar and you’re not supposed to use metal. I found this set of four mother of pearl cocktail spoons. I knew if we just put these in the serving utensil drawer they’d get scratched all to heck and possibly broken. If we put them in the “silver” chest, they’d never get used. So a soft case was in order!
It folds in half and ties with ribbon. I thought a roll would be all wonky given the shapes of spoons and the need to keep them from sliding out. This concerned me (overly, I admit) such that I decided to make it so half the spoons slid in one way and the other half slid in the other. Each pocket is sewn down the middle to keep the spoons from scratching each other.
In order to not have any metal on the inside of the spoon slots, I used sew-on snaps. to keep the flaps closed.
Despite all of the (over)thinking of the design, my finishing touches are a little sloppy. Mostly this is because the when and where I had to work on this has dim lighting that I didn’t bother to remedy. That said, I don’t think this is going to be falling apart.
All materials are stash! That’s why I ended up with black ribbon ties.
The Caviar Experience includes 4 kinds of caviar (none are fancy or beluga or Russion or whatever), these spoons, small glass pinch bowls, and an ice crushing set (Lewis bag and birch mallet), as well as a printed out recipe for blinis (Russian mini pancakes). I’ll put together another box with perishables closer to the day to store (gift wrapped) in the fridge: creme fraiche, chives, hard-boiled eggs, smoked salmon. This gift will be from Vivienne who is still too young to help picking out gifts for her papa.
