More Map Sketchbooks

I keep a supply of sketchbooks in a basket on my desk at school because I don’t want kids doodling on the desks or random pages in their science notebooks. It also makes me nuts when they do fabulous drawings on lined paper.

After a closet clean out, a few old maps were destined for the dumpster so I grabbed them. This one was of the Pacific Ocean. I used the entire map to make 3 different sizes- 8.5 X 5 1/2 inches, 6 X 5 1/2 inches, 4 1/4 X 4 1/2 and I ended up with 29 in all. I’m only keeping one of them

Each one has 5 sheets of plain, white paper, trimmed to size as needed, folded in half and machine stitched (with the longest stitch my sewing machine has).

Ohh this is genius! My son has quite the artistic ability but he literally ONLY draws on lined paper. What is with that?! Now I’m thinking about what I can repurpose to entice him to use white paper

LOL! A perfectly good drawing ruined with pale blue lines- arrhghh! I don’t get it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I started putting these out last year and a bunch of kids used them, so something with a fun cover might work. It’s fun to watch them pick through the basket to find the “best” one.

Aw, shucks! Honestly, the last 2 years made me lose some of the joy, but this year, the vibe is so different with my students that it’s feeling fun again!

Thank you! And, I was pretty impressed that I was able to use every last piece of the map. Any of the bits of white paper that I trimmed off for the smaller versions will go to the art teacher. She uses them in her classes.

These are great, do you stitch them on a regular machine?

Amazing! I love how dedicated you are to your students!

I do! I set my stitch length to 5 (as high as my machine goes) and I stitched them with the map side facing up, since it seemed to feed better.

I just need to remember to mark that needle as my “paper sewing” needle! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Thank you! I know that some of my students can afford fancy journals, but so many of them can’t, so it’s a nice way to support them in their artistic pursuits
