My daughter’s new vintage bike

Several years ago when my daughter just started riding this bike, she told me that she’d prefer a “skinny” bike like the one I built for myself.

I started looking for vintage mixte kids bikes and found one in perfect condition but way to large for her at the time.

Good thing that little girls grow pretty fast.

For her birthday last year we tried riding that bike and she fit on the lowest saddle position.

Then we started discussing how to rebuild and this is the result.

My daughter shares my love for vinyl decals and asked for a hummingbird theme.

Very nice!! It looks so fun to ride. My own bike is not vintage but retro and it’s a joy to ride it. Did you get a new saddle and handlebars? The white looks so sparkly.

Thank you everyone!

@Immaculata everything white except the pedals is new. The pedals were surprisingly easy to clean. I also replaced the old single speed brake hub with a internal 3-gear freewheel hub.

I wish you were my mama…
After 7 years of seeing what most people buy in bikes for their kids (at least here in the US), I have to say I really like your choices. Internal gear hubs are great for kids. My husband has a 13 gear internal hub on one of his bikes and it is super low maintenance. I have seen only a few kid bikes with internal gear hubs here (all 3 speed) and they were also purchased by very bike-smart parents.

When my oldest one was little I was so disappointed of what you can buy in terms of kids bikes. They were mostly ugly and the setup was a lot worse than what I remembered from my bikes as a kid. Thanks to my dad the second bike I owned was a mixte

It’s a lot better now but most parents just don’t care. I try not to get angry when I see kids on poorly adjusted bikes trying to keep up with their parents on electric bikes. I mean they don’t even think enough to stay behind their kids when riding a bike :woman_shrugging:

DD took the bike to school for the first time today. Her reaction to the hub were just precious:

“It’s a hub with internal gears and no hub-brake? That’s so cool! It’s like the best features combined”

She actually might grow into a bike enthusiast
