I’m struggling with how to securely add yarn hair to dolls.
I lay the strands across the center and then chain stitch down the middle. The chain stitch gives me a loop to add additional strands to change up the style or make it fuller. Way faster than one strand at a time! You can stitch multiple strands to the loops…have you checked out YouTube? There are so many ways to do yarn hair.
I found this one that you can use your sewing machine!
I always sewed wefts as well but This easy crochet technique looks good too.
Yes…I have seen it done that way as well! I think that would be a good one for novelty yarn with lots of glitter or texture that might make sewing difficult! I have a mermaid doll that needs hair, so thanks for the link!
I moved this to discussion instead of finished project. You might get more advice there.
This looks easier than making wefts with the sewing machine.
I’ve also basically made a wide stitch crochet cap then loop knotted strands into the stitches. It’s nice for thick yarn hair and makes it very stylable in the end since none of the strands have a direction that they try to lie in.
Do you have or know of a tutorial? I get the idea but I am not sure how to make it happen.
For which part? First, I crochet a cap that fits tight to the dolls head in a color that will blend in under the hair yarn. Generally with worsted weight yarn, a I or J hook, and dc stitches. So, magic ring, then dc and increases in the round until the cap looks about right. I do find it stretches as you work with it, so I make it a little too small.
Then I cut lengths of the thick hair yarn, usually by wrapping around something then cutting a hank at once. Technically this leads to more trimming and potential waste at the end because you don’t actually want them all the same length, but it’s easier for me than keeping track of different lengths.
Then I start in the middle of the cap and add strands of yarn through stiches and/or around dc posts depending on how dense I want the wig to be. Just posts is probably easiest, just stitches the most secure, but both for super thick and luxurious hair. Secure strands using the cow hitch / lark’s head knot like this: LINK Basically, insert the middle of the strand through a hole and pull both ends through the loop you made, then snug tight. Repeat a lot.
When just about done I decide which area looks like the front to me and add strands around all the outer stitches there to give a nice hairline.
Then I pin it in place and sew the cap onto the head all around the edge and add center stiches until it feels secure. Then style and give a haircut!
Hopefully that helps? Let me know if not and I’ll take pictures next time I do one.
I made a wig like this for a Raggedy Ann costume… 3 frikken huge skeins of yarn later, lol. It’s an effective technique though.
Yeah, I can’t claim it’s the most efficient, but I do love that it makes doll hair easy to style when done. I remember being so annoyed at weft lines in my dolls’ hair when I was little that now I try to avoid them.
My first baby doll had weft lines and when her hair fell out, the holes lined up around her head were so ugly that I made a hat to cover her head. I’ve done a cap of hair before and, yeah, it seems like you are adding hair forever! But, it sure looks full and nice.
This is great. I think I can do this. Thank you.
