This is the current state of the art wall, and it is a work in progress, but! I need to take you back to the beginning, way back to January…
We moved back into our offices after a renovation at the end of 2025. There was, of course, a flurry of activity and decorating and more than a little disagreement. Or course everyone’s tastes are different. But there was this one wall, a very large wall, that some people felt was fine completely blank. Others… did not feel that way.
Eventually it was decided it would be a tasteful wall of black and white historical photos. The project started… and stalled. I got tired of staring at this enormous blank wall, so being the sarcastic person I am, I added a piece of artwork…
The important thing about this artwork is, obviously, the scale:
This made people laugh, and I had hoped it would spur on the decorating again. But then my coworker had an idea… and I acted on it.
Now, you’d think this would get the people in charge to tell me to knock it off, that is is highly unprofessional, and we’d get back to decorating with the agreed classy scheme. Nope. People loved it. So it was time to up the stakes.
One thing about a lot of the art from here on out, I leaned into the fact that we use Extended DISC at work, so you will see a lot about the four colors (red, blue, green, yellow) and a heavy-handed explanation about DISC styles. This is in part tongue-in-cheek, but it’s also playing into it being a metaphor for teamwork. I have no idea when this morphed from something silly to something I felt actually had to have meaning and work together, but here we are!
At this point I’m not sure anything will get us back to the original concept, people are actively looking forward to the additions to the wall, and as much as I protest that this is not MY wall and anyone can contribute, I think I have assumed full responsibility?
At this point, I’m trying to work in as many art styles and whatnot as I can. I’m getting frighteningly good at wordsmithing the descriptions and I’m not sure how I feel about how easy it is…
For the 6th iteration I did ask people to provide scraps of paper for the collage, so it would be a collaborative project.
And finally, the one that has thus far taken me the longest (and caused the most frustration, this one didn’t come together easily!)…
We are planning a department activity to get another layer where everyone gets to contribute, but there’s still a lot of wall to cover, so any ideas are greatly appreciated!
Also, I still cannot believe not only am I not in trouble for this, but it’s become a part of my job… ![]()
