Painting a ukulele

My brother got me a turquoise ukulele for my birthday last year. He bought it from someone and commissioned a Winnie the pooh drawing on there. Now did they paint it without a white background so the turqouise shines through. I want to change this so it will be brighter.
But I asked her what kind of paint she used and she said it was “water repellent paint” and she had troubles layering paint.
If i google I find that most use acrylic, but that’s when they paint on gesso on the wood.
What kind of paint can I use on top of these?
Or should I just give acrylics a try?

Here’s a picture of what I mean:
( on the picture the colours are much brighter than in real life)

Acrylic paint probably wouldn’t stick to “water repellent paint,” whatever that is.

Maybe try oil paint.

I’m thinking, perhaps a posca pen or other paint pen could work?

If that’s oil based, it might.

So cute!!

I think You could try sanding the area lightly to rough up the surface before applying any new paint. Acrylics can work well, especially if you prep the surface with gesso first. Alternatively, some painter and decorators use paint pens like Posca might be a good option since they work on various surfaces. Just make sure to seal everything with a clear coat afterward to protect your design. Good luck.
