Towards the end of last year, I started playing around with paper clay. I took some pictures of the work while in progress. They look a little strange before they were painted because I used some red tissue paper as some of the recycled paper for the clay. So, the results of the clay looked a bit…like raw ground beef.
Anyway, the dried and painted results turned out pretty well. This is still something I am playing around with, but I thought they’d make a nice first thing to share upon re-entering the craft community.
Please, let me know what you think and give me tips if you’ve played around with paper clay before!
These are so neat! I love them all. You did such a great job and that is a cool and unusual medium.
They remind me a little of this wonderful artist that I recently saw an art showing for. Gracen Bookmyer (here is their instagram page.) They make these giant masks that are beautiful and haunting.
I too am most fond of the cyclops, fun work!
Susie’s post really shows how large paperclay sculptures can be. I’m sure the light weight of the medium helps with that.
I love that you used what you had on hand. These all look so earthy and folksy to me. I love your interpretations, and the colors are so perfect for each style!
@susieoregon omg, thank you for sharing that profile. That’s such inspiration fuel! I have also made some large masks before too, but I have never done a proper photo shoot with them. I think that’s something I need to get working on. It gives them so much more character than just hanging on the wall.
@Magpie ooh thanks for telling me your favorite. I’d love to start selling my stuff in the future and it always helps to know what people prefer or gravitate to.
@Bunny1kenobi thank you. I’ve been looking at more folk art recently and eco-friendly crafts. These were made with just paper pulp and flour! Sometimes it’s not easy working with non-traditional supplies, but I also like the challenge
