What were the params for the accent piece? Could it be color or was it supposed to be something see through like the white hole piece? I like the base but it’s almost like the top piece is competing with the circles on the book page because of the same circular shape and color.
How are you liking the class so far? It looks like she’s going into a lot of great composition stuff (which is an area where I need way more knowledge and practice).
it was supposed to be a light neutral and sort of transparent. I should have used modeling paste on tissue paper. Even the instructor’s white neutral collages just kinds looked “ehhh”
But again it was just an exercise.
List this one. Only using black and white magazine pages, one each square, use 3 pieces of paper, of different font syles/sizes.
I don’t like working with magazine papers. I should have used a glue stick but used matte medium which just made a grimy mess with the ink of the magazine. If I did this again I would need more magazines - I only had one. and use a glue stick. then use a colored accent piece.
The parts where she goes over different techniques to make painted papers is fun. Some of the techniques I’ve done before but we are supposed to be doing them in our color palette. And making sure to get light, medium, dark values.
In the free 10 day class we only used 2 primary colors and mixed them
In the paid class we are using 3 primaries
And I actually did what I was supposed to and mapped out the palette. I’m liking the greens and the burnt oranges I got from these colors.
And yes she is focusing a lot on value and getting in a mix of light, medium dark, values. She showed a trick of holding a piece of red see through plastic that will mask the color of papers but where you can also see the darkness of papers compared to others.
I like the trick I saw in one video of taking grey scale photos of your papers to see what kind of value it is.
It’s making me think more. I normally just work and do what feels right without too much thought but she’s showing you with even just a little more though you can get a better balance.
I heard a quote once “value does all the work but color gets all the credit”. Something my beginning watercolor teacher taught us was to make a value scale at the beginning of a painting and then check to make sure we had all of the values represented before calling it done. It’s amazing how something as simple as bumping up the contrast really makes paintings pop.
Awesome! This is also useful to remember when you’re drawing too - you can get a lot more variety and expression with your marks if you don’t always hold the pencil/pen/charcoal etc. like you hold a pen when you’re writing. I’m always trying to remind myself about this.
When were you thinking to do the Feb zoom? I could make it to any Monday except the 19th (not sure if you were thinking to keep it on Mondays or mix it up).
I agree the middle one is best. I got some nice comments from the instructor. I mean I know she has a vested interest in making sure her students are happy but it was still nice
I wasn’t necessarily planning on only Monday’s, although that did seem to be the best week day. Sundays seemed to be the top pick. I’m waiting on @Abbeeroad’s input. We will do a video using some of the collage papers we made and since she requested that want to make sure it’s a day that works for her.
I think Mondays might be better for me until after cheer/ski season…I’m either on the mountain or stuck in a school gym for hours most weekend mornings. Though I’m usually home by 3 at the latest, and could prob swing it if it were after then.
Another piece that I am calling done. I got some texture paste and this was my first time using it. It’s very shiny, I wasn’t expecting that.
I need more practice using it
