Because I am apparently that pet parent, I decided the cats needed a fun little accessory for their upcoming birthdays (they’re not littermates or anything, just all coincidentally autumn babies).
I found an easy-to-follow pattern on HatsonCatsCrochet’s Etsy shop and wound up modifying it just a touch. The pattern calls for a 2mm crochet hook; the smallest I had was 2.5mm, and really, how much difference can that half a millimetre make? (I suspect the really seasoned crocheters are laughing at me right now.) It also called for a specific brand of yarn but didn’t mention the weight - I looked it up after the fact and apparently should have been using a fingering weight instead of worsted. What could possibly go wrong?
Luckily, I noticed partway through that the hat was looking a little large for the average housecat and left the last six rounds off so that it wouldn’t engulf their entire heads. Instead of edging the bottom with a puff stitch I did a final round of hdc. Now it was time for try-ons with the most agreeabe cat of the bunch.
I’m lucky he’s agreeable, because that oversized hat was trying its darnedest to fall over his eyes.
Because the hat turned out quite pliable and malleable thanks to its tight amigurumi-style stitching, I tried squeezing it a bit to make it a bit more oblong and sit further back on his head.
It came out so cute and I love the pics! The colors really pop. My cats are now muttering that THEY don’t have cushy knit blankets on cushy pillows next to giant windows . Though the one cat would definitely eviscerate me if I tried to put a hat on him…he’s special.
“Eviscerate….” Such a fun word! And probably ENTIRELY appropriate!
@wittychild I’m glad you at least have ONE cat who won’t maul you within an inch of your life for putting this awesome ray of sunshine on him! It turned out really cute and these are perfect party colors!
