Patchwork Coat

This project was on my list of things to do in 2025, and it was a challenge. My year has been chaotic, and then, in the middle of quilting, my sewing machine broke.
I had to buy a new one and get used to all its quirks and differences. It was trial by fire, and I finished it up after a marathon sewing session.
There were a few mistakes. After fretting over the fabric placement, I switched the front panel and some fabrics match up, but that’s okay. I still love it.

I fell in love with the fabric colors and patterns. I love a fabric with text. This is Filigree - Zen Chic by Moda. I bought so many charm packs, and then I decided I wanted 4" squares, so I ended up cutting each square anyway. I love how the side lined up!

The pattern is The Elemental Coat by Crinkle Dreams.

I love that on my right arm I can see this —the perfect little squares matching up —and a bat. LOL! It makes me happy.

The inside is lined with the non-shiny side of a satin blend and quilt batting. It is nice and cozy. I might add a zipper, but I haven’t decided quite yet. I am loving it so far.

Oh, and I got Quilting labels just for this project. Yes, I need to trim some threads still. I put on the inside pocket. LOL! It looks just like my mom’s cat Ernie.

I think this is one of the biggest projects I have done in a long time. It felt good to accomplish just in time to enjoy it. :jack_o_lantern:

So glad you finished it! The colors and fabrics are great! I love the placement of the fabrics on the back especially…the gradient look!

WOW!! I love everything about your coat! The color way is great, the placement you have of the fabrics, the fit of the coat, the tag, and you look so stinking adorable in it! Am I remembering correctly that you also just started quilting/sewing last year?!

The absolute coolest coat ever. I love the style, the look, the fabric choices, that label. It’s such a wonderful piece that you’ll get to wrap up in every winter! Wonderful work. I have serious coat envy right now .

It was a struggle, but you had wins all the ways on this! It’s really great. And I’m impressed that there was supposedly only minimal swearing.

The biggest hurdle (besides the sewing machine) was getting my cats off the table while I arranged fabrics. LOL!
Thank you all so much. I am really proud of my coat and each of you has made me feel so good about it!

Wow!! This came out soo good. Your color choices are spot on and you did a great job with the placement of each square. Even though you have grays next to grays and yellows next to yellows, you still managed to provide variation.

Where are the pockets? I think I might see a pocket in your third pic, but I can’t tell for sure.

I love your label and the fact that you got custom labels specifically for this project. I feel that when you’ve put so much time and effort into a project, it only makes sense to follow through on the details and you’ve definitely done that! I also like your choice of yellow thread for the quilting. It makes the quilting pop and is a lovely finishing touch!

And perfect.

The pockets are hidden. They are right in the side seams. I chose to hand sew them into place on the inside instead of sewing through all the layers and leaving an outline.

Pockets, too? Well, that just elevated that coat! You are too nice…My label would have said Lots and lots of swearing…ha ha!

You could definitely enter it in the spooky thingy going on…. because it has a bat on it! It also has fall vibes.

I am so in love with this coat. I’d be tempted to wear it even in AZ triple digit summers if I was lucky enough to have something this fabulous!

The pattern wasn’t hard at all. I was just so insecure about my quilting. I am new to it. I would highly recommend the pattern if anyone wants to try it.

@Bunny1kenobi Thanks so much. You know how much I agonized over this coat AND using my new sewing machine (named him Patch).

And Patch is a perfect name.

PS that little look over your shoulder is cracking me up!
