I didn’t know how to tag this one because it is home decor, machine embroidery, applique, digitizing…
Another Project Quilting inspired piece. I don’t recall the challenge but it brought up pennies and this is a penny table topper I did as a last minute project (I know. Shocker!)
For some reason I haven’t yet tracked down, the blanket stitches were off center on some of the circles. I didn’t worry too much since this is a proof of concept stitch out and I was using cheap craft felt. If I ever get it figured out, I’ll do something more complicated in wool felt. Because I love the look but I don’t seem to have the patience to complete an hand sewn project like this.
It is a style of wool mat made up of layered circles of wool stitched together with a blanket stitch and backed with something like burlap (traditional) or mostly black wool now. Started during the Civil War. Mostly decorative and not rugs in spite of the fact that they are often called rugs. They were traditionally made from scraps of woven wool clothing. Today they are a mix of felted wovens and wool felt. This one is cheap craft store felt as a proof of concept test. Now, they include things like applique and decorative embroidery. You can find kits in most places that carry embroidery supplies and often in quilt shops. They tend to be on the rustic/homespun/reproduction side of the quilt world. But they can look amazingly modern as well. I’ve handstitchled one and this is my machine embroidery attempt. You can learn more from this link.
Or just do a search for will felt embroidery kits. It is amost overwhelming the number and variety of patterns that are out there.
