For the Positive Affirmations swap, I made some flags for my partners!
These were fun to work on and it was hard to let them go!
I started by cutting (ripping ) some green fabric for the flag bases and digging through my fabric stash to see what I had. (So many novelty fat quarters that match nothing!) I thought I might want to use these fabric strips left over from a quilt I made, but I needed to wash them first.
So I washed the strips with a bunch of other fabric I had. After trimming frayed strings from all of the edges, I ended up with a big ball of many colors of thread (I wish I had taken a picture!). I thought there had to be a way to use them, so I spread them out flat to dry.
Once everything was dry, I arranged my fabric strips and thread bits on my flag bases to see how they would look:

For the scrappy thread flag, I remembered seeing someone online somewhere sandwich little fabric bits between a fabric backing and some tulle, so I decided to try it out. I did a straight stitch around the edges and several lines horizontally across to keep the threads in place, then did a zigzag closer to edges:
Then I trimmed the edges, adding a narrow zigzag around them to keep any thread bits at the edge in place, and planned the placement of “I may not be perfect but parts of me are pretty awesome”:
(stamped with alphabet stamps)
I stitched the quote in place with embroidery thread and finished up the back:

For the rainbow flag, I trimmed and ironed my fabric strips and started sewing them to their base:
(‘perfectly imperfect’ was stamped with some alphabet stamps)
After sewing everything to the base, I cleaned up the edges and added purple ribbons at the bottom. While stitching them in place, I decided it needed more stitching and pulled out some embroidery thread:
I ended up stitching down the middle of each stripe with coordinating embroidery thread, then stitched the text in place with more embroidery thread and finished up the back:

I love how swaps influence me to try new things!
