I was working on this piece the past few nights. I got a projector as an early xmas gift. I was gonna buy it myself, but my family ordered it for me.
So thank you family. I’m happy with the results for my first time using it and like where it’s at. I was thinking of doing more to it, but as I kept looking at it the past day I’m actually digging how it looks. I just don’t know where to sign it.
I used Posca pens and it’s on a 18x24 canvas. I basically did it in 5 phases. Took a bit of time, but it was fun and I’m gonna try more for sure. I got a few other photos of this statue so I’m gonna try one of the other ones in the next week. Gotta get some more canvases.
Thanks to everyone on here for the encouragement, inspiration, advice and tips over the past year. I appreciate it. I wouldn’t be at this point without these forums and the folks on here.

The line work on the face is mesmerizing!
I am not sure I understand about the projector…you use a photo and project it on the canvas? So it might take the place of tracing? I have traced photos onto graphite papers and then transfered them onto a canvas to get started…what a time consuming endeavor!
So, is it like a slide projector or an overhead projector? I have both but have never used them for art…very interesting…can’t wait to see more of your work.
@AIMR it’s a digital projector that cost about 60 bucks. I projected the image I took last year onto it as a guide and did rough lines using just the black and grey Posca pens with some mild blending for most of it and for the “background” I used black, grey and white with rough lines and more blending in that open area.
Honestly I’ve known people that have used projectors, but at my cousins wedding earlier this year there were a lot of artist there and one of them does art work using a projector and she really put the bug in my ear to try one. So I finally decided to bite the bullet and get one.
@endymion you got it. Each day I did a little bit more and more. I’ll start with the original image then post the stages I did over the couple of days I worked on it. The final stage is the finished product.
Also today at the local coffee shop that host artist each month. Some guy saw it and asked how much I’d sell it for and liked my photography. I told him I wasn’t sure and he asked for my contact info. So I’ll see where it goes. I don’t mind selling it cause I have the first print of the image I did and a canvas print is at the hospice where I took it at. It’s 1 of 1 and I’m honestly glad they have it there.
Yes, very interesting! Completely different from how I draw. I rough out all the shapes and then work into them. But I guess when you use a projector, you can just work across the image from left to right, as you have done. (Although I suppose you did rough out the arm first.) Thanks for posting the process photos!
Welcome and I roughed out each section and then filled em in. I did the top part of the head outline first then scribbled it in in two phases. Then I did the bottom the same way, but did the arm outline as well. Next time I finished the arm, and the last time I did the empty space.
I just don’t know what to charge for it. I was thinking 400. My sister and buddy said that. My buddy said for a 18x24 I should ask no less.
I’m sometimes in the light, but it’s kinda hard to explain how I got my setup going. I’ll snag a photo of how I do it tomorrow when I work on another piece some more if that’s ok.
@Kwality570 I basically have it mid to lower on my right side when facing my surface. I draw and write left handed so i can kind of lean over the beam. I do block it sometimes but since its basically at the edge I’m drawing it works out cause I’m a lefty.
