Pyrography chopping board

I have been wanting to have a go at pyrography for a while and when a colleague mentioned she had also wanted to, we booked ourselves onto an evening course.

We had a practice with some scraps of wood first and the instructor showed us how to get different effects. I found it easiest to think of the tool as a calligraphy pen.

I had already thought about doing a mandala pattern and when she had the round chopping boards as an option, it fitted perfectly. I had taken along a protractor and compass with me, just in case, which the instructor thought was hilarious

I was so happy with the finished piece - the course was 2.5 hours, once we had practiced a bit, I think I ended up taking just over 2 hours to finish this. I am certainly not going to be using it as a chopping board, just for putting buffet items on the table.

The instructor kept asking to take photos throughout the piece and asked if she could share to her Instagram - Misty Ceramics on Instagram (I have no affiliation with either the instructor or company that arranged the course  )

It’s so beautiful. Hard to believe you are new to the craft. Will you wax or treat it in some way? Does one do that with wood burned crafts?

Wow! This is so impressive! I always find the wood burning ‘pen’ to be a bit unwieldy and I never get smooth lines. It looks like you mastered the use of the burner pretty darn quickly though! I can’t believe this only took you two hours. Beautiful work!

The chopping board was pre-treated, so it doesn’t need further treatment apparently. If it had been untreated wood, then you can wax or varnish over the pattern.

So gorgeous! I love that you can still use it as a trivet and won’t risk damaging it any! I love the decoration you used on the edge too!

I love the smell of woodburning. I bet the class smelled amazing!
