Quilt As You Go (QAYG):
The quilt as you go technique allows you to do your quilting as you’re creating your quilt, as opposed to quilting after you’ve finished your entire quilt top. There are a few different ways of doing this. You can do a stitch and flip method as portrayed in this June Tailor video (the preprinted batting is helpful, but not necessary), you can quilt around appliqued pieces of fabric before joining your blocks together, or you can also quilt individual blocks and join them with or without sashing to create a final product that’s already quilted.
ShinyHappyWorld - This website offers information on the QAYG process including videos, quilting pattern ideas, and a variety of tips for QAYG.
Quarter 3 Challenge
(July 1 - September 30)
Jelly Roll Race:
September 16th is National Sew A Jelly Roll Day - the perfect time to work on this challenge!
The race is on to create a fun quilt using either precut jelly roll strips or strips you’ve cut yourself. Whether you choose to make an original Jelly Roll Race quilt (you can have a completed quilt top in an hour or less ), create your own unique variation of said Jelly Roll Race, or simply race to your machine with a favorite jelly roll pattern, the challenge is to create a quilt project using 2.5" strips of fabric.
The QAYG technique is great for creating projects with jelly rolls. Just search ‘jelly roll quilt as you go patterns.’ You can complete the prompt and challenge all at the same time!
I was digging for something in the craft room and came across some leftover flannel charm squares and scraps from my SIL lap quilt I made last winter.
So I stitched this up, then had to order fabric for the borders and binding…and it was onsale at Missouri Quilt. And ordered a sheet for the backing. Will I ever learn? One scrap project creates more scrap projects.
I’ll have another lap quilt to donate soon!
There are still some squares left in dull browns and greens…they will get used somewhere.
I saw this and thought of you all. I don’t think I’ve seen it here before. I especially thought of @marionberries and @AIMR Oh, and @MistressJennie 's halloween quilt.

That was an adorable block! It would make a great panel for a tote bag! Thanks for sharing!
It was clearly bedtime when I wrote that… scrappy scraps It would be great for jelly rolls as well! I had totally forgotten they were this month’s prompt, obviously.
Now my craft room is set up, I’m trying to think of other excuses to not quilt the two finished crib sized tops I made last year. But I’m afraid I’m running out. I also have three other WIPs, but I’m very tempted to start a new Halloween project first.
I love those peeping cats. We have teo black cats right now, our forever cat Felix and little Bessie. Bessie is from our last foster litter and has had surgery on her paws, and has some problem with herback legs. The whole litter was inbred and had very strange extra messed up toes. She is a sweetie and will be with us a while longer as her leg issue is evaluated.
I finished quilting the second memory quilt. I should trim and bind them both now, but I have two quilt tops that have been waiting around for ages. So while the dining room table is already moved, I decided to pin baste and quilt them too. First one is the scrappy Diamond Trip.
I got the Diamond Trip quilted today! Tried to pull out the pieces to quilt my Have a Heart top next, but when I unfolded it, it was bigger than I remembered, and bigger than the twin batting I have. I’m either going to have to pick up a bigger piece of batting, or look into getting it quilted from a long arm.
@MistressJennie, it sounds like you’ve been super productive at getting everything quilted! I hope you’re able to get them bound and finished soon (this is where I sometimes stall out and why 2? maybe 3 years later I still have three quilts that just need to be labeled and bound).
I’m always impressed by how so many of you in the quiltalong manage to complete quilts so quickly! I’ve finished the stitching on my mom’s Candy Corn Quilt Shoppe quilt and just need to bind and label it, then it will be time to add the embellishments! I think I’ll get hers bound (no more stalling on this one, this is already my third year of working on it), then stitch and bind mine. That way I’ll get the ‘work’ out of the way and then I can finish them both with the last fun step of adding embellishments.
