Quiltalong - 2025

Winter wall quilt top is done! I made some little Friendship Stars to go in the corners, and added borders from the only FQ in the bundle that I hadn’t used at all. I found a nice deep navy batik with light pinkish-purple dragonflies on it to use as binding, and a scrap of plain blue for the banking. I think it’s about 22".

I’m hoping to get it pin basted tomorrow, and quilted in the next few days. It’s going on the back of the door from our kitchen/entryway to the garage. The room is painted a sad pigeon grey, and the door was originally cream, but now is dingy and chipped from 44 years of use. (I know, I can just paint it. I’m getting to it.) But over holidays I used some strong magnets to hang a Christmas tree wall quilt on the door, and it really made the place feel more homey and welcoming. I’m hoping this does the same.

It’s lovely and surely better than a dingy old door! The little corner stars are so cute! Tiny sewing…I love how you just used what you had!

It is beautifull and will cheer your kitchen up.

I get it about getting used to something you can easily fix. It’s like an old friend with a few rough edges.

I love it and wall quilts really make a place feel homely. Please post a picture of it in situ

I thought I’d only be able to baste today, but since I started dinner in the crockpot in the morning, I had a bit more time in my studio this afternoon. I really pushed, and managed to quilt it too!

Well, I unexpectedly have a new quilt project, with a short deadline.

Backstory: Ada is nearly 4 years old, but weighs just 30 lbs. She sleeps in a toddler bed which is rated up to 50lbs, so we expected her to be in it awhile longer. But in the past week she has repeatedly told us her bed is uncomfortable and hurts her back. Then on Thursday, at 4:45 am, she left her room (without the baby monitor kicking on at all), walked the length of the house upstairs in the dark, came down the back stairs, through the downstairs into the living room, where she turned on the light (waking us in the bedroom next door), found herself a pillow, an afghan and Lovey, turned the light back off, then tucked herself in to sleep on the couch. Jim and I asked what she was doing. She said her bed is uncomfortable so she’s going to sleep in the living room now.

:joy: :joy: :joy:

No. No you’re not kid.

Add to that, she regularly wakes us up in the middle of the night to come upstairs and readjust the 4 blankets she sleeps with, and it’s time for a real bed with sheets. Yesterday I ordered a twin mattress and a cute set of sheets with watercolor pink hearts, both of which should be here in a few days. But what about a bed quilt? My quilter’s heart can’t justify picking up a cheap polyester comforter at Target, so I googled around for twin size patterns that were good for kids. This Heartsy pattern came up and Ada saw it on my screen and loved it. A twin calls for 25 fat quarters or regular quarter yard cuts. I looked around for a FQ bundle online, but didn’t see anything that wowed me. Then I remembered that I have a bunch of Tula Pink scrap cuts that are 1/4 yard!

I pulled out 13 that I thought would work, and headed to the LQS this morning. I picked up 12 more quarters/fat quarters, background, binding and backing. Guys, I don’t know how any of us afford to quilt, as those came to $186. Imagine if I had to buy those other 13 quarters! And I’ll still need to get batting.

The rainbow print on the far left is backing. The pink Grunge is the background. The two rainbow arcs of small cuts will be the scrappy hearts and chains. The deep pink along the top will be one of the hearts and binding. And the little cluster of 4 on the top left are spares from my stash in case any of the prints just feel wrong when I’m putting it all together.

Gorgeous combination of colors and fun prints! I think it is great when you have a purpose for making anything because it drives you to get it done quickly and you know it will be put to use right away!

What a cute story…Ada knows what she wants!

She’s your daughter alright, she knows what she wants and quietly makes it happen, go Ada!

That fabric pull is lovely. I hear you on the price of fabric, I think that’s why so many of us hoard, if we see something cheap/reasonable, we snap it up.

I have a crazy hoard for someone who has lived far from fabric shops for most of my life. If I lived where there were creative reuse stores and estate sales, I would be drowning in fabric.

The price of quilting fabric is definitely one of the reasons I save every little scrap, and I always keep my eyes open for cotton that has the right weight to use in quilts. I don’t really buy for stash normally, but discounted charm packs and cheap printed cotton are an exception.

I think Ada’s quilt is going to be gorgeous, girly but not childish. It’s an investment and a labour of love but she will get so many years of use out of it.

What a perfect quilt for the girl who loves love!!

I was showing off my star quilt to my DS and his family and he claimed it. I’m so happy he wanted it. So now I have to finish the quilting and binding. I worked another 2 hours today in between making and dehydrating cat treats. Now I am resting my back. Oof.

When you’re drawing diagonal lines on the back of 100 2” squares, you have a lot of time to wonder about your life choices…
