Quiltalong - 2025

Gorgeous! I too had some brain pain looking at the orientation of those bits in your earlier unstitched image & I’m usually quite good at that sort of mental visualization. This is really confusing to look at until it’s done, then it’s super pretty.

Anyone else doing Karen Brown’s annual declutter challenge? I just love her, she’s practical, gentle, encouraging, & utterly fallible in the way of crafters which makes her so relatable. I just caught up on the 4 past days & even though a lot of it doesn’t apply to me this year since I’m freshly moved in to a new space, it’s still full of great advice and inspiration.

Playing in my studio for the first time in ages. No plan, no assignment. Just creating for the fun of it.

Well, I was going to suggest Cordelia’s Garden as our January BOM, but I can’t find directions online for free anywhere. I pulled it out of my copy of The Skill-Building Quick & Easy Block Tool, then altered the directions so I could make 2 At a Time HSTs, and added a central diamond to the empty space in the middle, to include more color from my FQ bundle.

I made it in 15", to turn into a wall hanging quilt, but the cutting directions offer sizes for 3", 6", 9", 12" and 15". I just wish I could find it to share.

It turned out lovely!

The shape is similar to the Maple Star, which is a lot simpler. Yours has so many more patterns and colors. I love it!

We should do all stars in 2026! There are so many. I remember kbrison always asked for stars in blue and yellow. I bet I still have all the patterns for those!

I like that idea! And I like your block @MistressJennie . When I’m done with the HST stars for my current projects, I might give your block a try. Maybe with a bit of practice I can finally learn how to make these without constant seam ripping.

Lovely block @MistressJennie . My designer brain says, that’s easy, it’s just squares and HSTs. Break it down to a 3 x 3 block and make 4 of them. But I know my brain just does not work like everyone elses.

I think all stars would be fun. I am just finishing an all stars lap quilt, but I would love to do a more colorful one.

I’ve done a few RWB ones but I love how many variations you can do with stars!

I was also thinking that we could use some of the past blocks that weren’t made for one reason or another. For me, it was just that I didn’t have the time. I still want to make a block you suggested in 2025 that had Christmas colors. It was one of the prettiest blocks ever!

This one! I love it!

All of the snow globe fabrics, including the tiny bits are fused down using steam-a-seam 2.

It did! I actually started the collage last year and got as far as the globe. Then it got put away until this year. I had hoped to at least finish the collaged portion (it still needed the base, the rim, and the plaque) before LittleBookLover and I left for the apartment, but I never got the chance to work on it. So, on the day that we were all going to head out to the apartment, I went through my fabrics here at the house to gather up everything I’d need to finish it. I grabbed a few navy background possibilities and a few backing/binding possibilities. I’m glad I grabbed the pink ombre fabric, because I too really like the way it turned out! Also, I’m glad that I had enough yellow scraps to make the rim after I decided to change direction from a pink rim!

@LittleCogs, your Eccentric Beauty quilt is looking good! Are you going to quilt each quadrant differently?

@MistressJennie, I love how your block came out!

Fourth Quarter wrap-up:
We have four quilters who have earned the Quilter’s Tea-light Prize Pack!
@gozer
@AIMR
@MistressJennie
@LittleCogs

If anyone else earned 7 points this last quarter, please let me know. Also, check your bingo cards to see if you’re a winner. If you got a bingo, you are automatically eligible for a prize, regardless of how many points you earned. And don’t forget - the first person to call bingo will receive an additional prize. As of right now, we don’t have any bingos yet this quarter. All prize claims need to be made by January 10th.

We will be continuing the BOMs this year. Please vote below on if you would like all those BOMs to be star blocks. The poll will close on January 10th.

Should we do all star blocks for the 2026 BOMs?

Finished all but the last block! I’m glad that it’s turning out even prettier than I thought it would.

Five star blocks and five white squares will make a 24" - ish center bit. Then I’m adding some borders in different colours and maybe pinwheel cornerstones somewhere?

When I’m not working from a bought pattern I’m usually all about making it up as I go along. I see some of you draft out all these ideas, I don’t have the patience for that lol. When I get an idea I want to get started immediately!

Looks like you will be done in plenty of time and have a lovely quilt to be cherished!

I love the bright colors you picked!

Hey, guys…while cleaning up space in the basement, I came across a whole bin of quilt tops that I made in my earlier days of quilting. Most of them are pretty simple, like jelly roll quilt, disappearing 9-patch, etc. I think I was more enamored of the fabrics than of quilting! Anyway, a few of them still seem relevant to make some small baby quilts to give away or maybe even some lap quilts, but the rest…they almost look like fabric so I am thinking of just cutting my losses and making them into totes or pillows.

I am feeling a bit torn about chopping them up this way, but also, just leaving them in the bins seems a waste as well. There are currently about five of them. Any other ideas of what I can do with them? Without borders or sashing, most measure about 4x6. The largest (jelly roll) is queen size. I

I have seen pictures online of people that have made robes from quilts. Or finish and donate?

I am not up to finishing them into a quilt. I just don’t like them enough to put in the work. I’ll put them in a bin upstairs so I don’t forget them and start collecting some ideas.

Then I guess tote bags, pillows, zipper pouches, bunting etc are all simple shapes that can easily be made from a quilt top cut to pieces. I think stuffies would also look really cute made from quilts.

How about offering them to a quilting group or quilter? You’re not keen on them yourself, why try to find a project to do with them when you don’t really want to do anything with them at all? Save your precious time.

I made a coat and love it! You could make lots of things, placemats, pot holders, casserole carriers, totes, pillow covers, table runners, fabric scarves, the possibilities are endless!

I am viewing all of my WIPS and even planned projects with my time in mind. Not only do we need to use the good stuff, we need to make the best use of our precious time!

Yes! Only projects we love. Using the good stuff includes our time, our time is the best of the “good stuff”!
