Quiltalong - 2025

I just read about that storm. Stay safe, and fingers crossed the electricity stays on for you. Sounds like you have an amazing day planned if it does.

What a weird winter! My sister is in South Florida where no one has heat in their homes. The temperature dropped to about 58 F. Fortunately, they have heated beds and they were able to get a space heater. No beach weather for her for a while!

Losing electricity is a concern, especially if you have a well and no other way to heat your home or to cook! We have a gas stove but it still needs an electric spark to fire the pilot light!
The good news is that where we live, winter storms are common so our township has the resources to clear snow and get all services up and running quickly.

Here is hoping you have an uneventful day of quilting and staying cozy and warm!!!

@MistressJennie – I love the colors and patterns you have chosen for the kids’ quilts! Will you be using the same pattern for all three?

Yeah, as it’s not really a pattern. Just random patchwork of 5" squares in blues, white, and grey. SheepBlue sent Ada a book called The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt. All the little ghost’s family members are sheets, but he’s a quilt. Since he’s heavier, he can’t float as fast or and isn’t as agile as his friends. He gets made fun of. In the end of course, he has an adventure and it turns out to be good that he’s different. Ada loves the book, and immediately started wearing quilts over her head, walking around going “Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh”.

The next day, Jim looked up the book, and saw that a bunch of people have made quilts that look like the ghost. (The author is also a quilter!) Basically the patchwork, with a ghost face added to it.)Here’s an example from Pine Needles Quilts.

To help add variation, I posted in Use It Or Lose It, and folks sent me fabrics for it. I had 4 different 1-yard cuts, and 4 more fat quarters. Some folks sent squares, others sent FQ’s or yardage. So I have a bunch of fun stuff to use.

Too cute…and I do remember now…Ada is such a bright, energetic child…she will use her imagination and “scare” a lot of people with her Little Ghost Quilt!

That is such a cute quilt @MistressJennie

@AIMR we have a gas hob, also electric ignition, but you can light it with a match, so we won’t starve.

Because she puts the quilts on her head, she wants to know… “Who is under there?” when she sees ghosts anywhere. Hasn’t quire figured out the concept of spirits. She also wants to “Are the ghosts afraid of Ada?” (The ghosts in the book are terrified of people.)

I hope you are staying safe (and with power) through Eowyn! The forecasts look terrifying.

The forecasts really are scary! The whole country is under a red weather alert, danger to life they are telling us. The wind are to be stronger than ever recorded here. So fingers crossed. It’s 10 30pm now and due to peak here at about 4am. So far it’s just very windy outside.

Thinking good thoughts for you my friend.

I hope you and your loved ones are doing well @Edel ! But it seems like the storm is as bad as predicted. The news says almost a million homes are without power and 150.000 homes are without water as well. And very few people live in Ireland, only a couple of million, so that’s a significant part of the country affected.

Just popping in briefly to say we’re all good. No power, like a like a lot of the country. But we have water and plenty of fuel for an open fire. We can also cook as we have a gas hob. And we’ve suffered no damage, so it’s all good. I’d be surprised if we get power back today. So I’ll need to conserve phone battery

Xx

Fortunately my mother’s power was restored early today, because my sister who is currently visiting her came downstairs to see this, in the kitchen, she was planning on cooking porridge and making tea

Glad your sister was there so no one got hurt! I hope your fire is a bit safer than that… Plus you’ve got piles of quilts to keep you warm. I’m glad you guys are safe and no damage, hope your power is restored soon!

Ahh! Edel’s Mum! No!

I’m glad that is just an “oh dear, look at this wacky situation” story and nothing overly dramatic. I can’t show this to my fire fighter husband or he’ll have palpitations. :face_with_peeking_eye:

(Note to self: perhaps a camp stove and lesson for mum for her next birthday.)

Glad to hear you’re safe for now darling.

Mon dieu, c’est terrifiant, maman!
Very happy to hear all is well otherwise!
Your dear mother could perhaps receive the gift of a camp stove in future, & you some power banks, though I’m certain Mollie has one at least for festivals.
Take care & happy quiet crafting today :kissing_heart:

I’m glad everyone is safe. We’ve been freezing cold here in the northeast and our lap quilts have been in heavy use. Between bedroom makeover, new kitchen appliances (really, I mist clean behind and under things more often), and making scrap squares for Hartford Stitche’s community quilt day. They make quilts for Journey Home for kids. Twenty 12" squares per quilt. They ask for 13" squares in one color way. So 63 squares later and a reduced pile of small/medium scraps, I am delivering today.

Then on to this…

@marionberries they are lovely, I particularly like your scrap blocks

We finally got power bank, but now we have no water, the treatment plants are out of water, we won’t get that back until 3 pm tomorrow. Which means we have no central heating, but we have a (safe!) fire and heaters and electricity!

@Magpie mammy is getting a camp stove asap. She regrets nothing as she managed to make porridge and boil water on her ‘device’.

@Immaculata oh lordy we have so many quilts, moll and I are currently snuggled under three  and we have extra ones on all the beds.

Ahhmazing! Of course I adore all those scrappy rainbow blocks in particular, of course. Just beautiful, and so visually interesting as well.

@Edel , your mom! :flushed: my gosh.
