I managed to sandwich two lap quilts today. I donāt have much open space and my usual open floor is the porch, but it is so cold. Rolled the living room rug up part way and got to work. Crawling around on the floor is not easy at my age, but I still do it.
You have got to check out the sitting at a table and pin basting method. Itās so much kinder on your back. Itās late here, if someone ( @sloth003 ?) doesnāt have a video to link, Iāll find one tomorrow
The table I often use for that is also on the porch and the dining table inside is awkward and heavy to move away from the wall. Too lazy I guess. Iāve done both floor and table. Today I used quilt spray adhesive.
āRandomizingā these fabrics was way harder than anticipated. It took 3 different models, by two people, over 2 days. Along with a few computers and some manual tweaking.
But I get to start sewing today, and even got to use the 3-D printed quilting letters and numbers Jim made me to keep them straight.
Truly random would have been easier, just grab bag pieces and no judgement. But esthetically pleasing ārandomā is hard. Switching any two fabrics causes others to need switching, which causesā¦
And then keeping it all correct when assembling. Thatās where I run into trouble, my dyslexia cause me to sew the wrong seam together or to turn the piece the wrong way.
I struggle with randomā¦I call what I do controlled randomā¦haā¦it bothers me to see two of the same prints touching etc. I have a few spreadshhets that let me ārandomāā¦I plug in how many different fabrics and how many of each yet I still have to futz it for value and pleasing to my eyes and not the formulaā¦haā¦curse of adhd
I pin basted once and quickly learned that I am not a fan - I am however a big fan of spray basting! I was browsing a quilt site yesterday and came across a tutorial for a no baste method. This lady makes a lot of quilts, so it must work pretty well!
I also like a controlled random where I donāt have the same colors touching at all. I have found that this is sometimes much more difficult than I anticipate, especially if Iām working with a limited color palette. I have a Halloween quilt top that is simply made up of charm squares, but while there are multiple prints in each color, there are only four colors, so it was difficult to get everything spaced out. I finally came up with a layout that I was happy with and took a picture, then gathered up each row and clipped it together with a letter. I edited the pic to add the letters to the beginning of each row, printed it out, and wrote the date that I took the pic (which was helpful information when working on the quilt a year later. Any time I needed to zoom in on a print to make sure I had everything in the correct order, I was able to quickly find the photo on my phone).
@MistressJennie, Iām glad you found a layout that you like and came up with a smart way to map out your layout!
Yesterday, I was thinking of my different quilting goals and how I need a bit of a push to get them accomplished. I felt like the incentive of a prize would be a good push, so I came up with a quilty prize for myself and am joining in on all the fun! I talked it through with my husband at lunch yesterday and we came up with the parameters for how I can win my prize - by either getting a Bingo or by getting 10 points this quarter. I feel like this is just the motivation I need to get going on my quilt projects!!
My quilt goals for this quarter:
Goal points=4
My Bingo cards:
Itās Wednesday, which means itās Bingo Call day!!
Todayās Bingo Call is:
Use a solid fabric
I love that you have a way to win. But I hope you put yourself in any prize drawing here!!
Iām working on my bingo goals, I bought a layer cake with my prize and Iāve been cutting it up and piecing today. Also been pulling out and trying to figure out my oldest fabric. I have a couple that have been in my stash about 30 years () and I have a plan to make something small with a piece of both.
Also, I finished my Butterfly in the Night Sky quilt 2 weeks ago, but havenāt gotten pictures to post it. Itās either been raining/snowing, insanely cold, or weāve been down with flu. Hopefully I can get pictures taken tomorrow.
Love that block!
I, ECLECTICdreamer, have completed the Jan block of the month, the more adventurous Aztek Jewel. Itās also one of my Q1 goals.
Donāt look too closely - some of my fabrics were somehow cut 1/8" too small, but I ran with it anyhow. My block is 11" unfinished. But itās done.
I actually love this block despite my failings, and will definitely make it again in future.
Itās a really nice block and I love your colour choices
That gorgeous, I canāt wait to see it done and Ada in it.
Looks like your random block placement worked out really nicely! What a great Ghost quilt for Ada!
@EclecticDreamer ā now that I have seen your block, I want to try the more complicated pattern! So lovely!
@edel I also love that block!
Thank you! For reference, hereās the ghost on the cover of the book, and the inside coverā¦
My quilt has a bit more blue, but I think the overall vibe of it matches the book well.
Itās raining again, so I still canāt get pics of the other quilt. Going to try to lay out both baby versions of the Ghost quilt during nap time. (Nap doesnāt seem to be happening⦠Sheās up there signing No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed at top volume.)
