Quiltalong - 2025

Thank you for the nomination, @Edel. That looks like a fun block! Funny enough, I was on that same site yesterday looking at quilt blocks.

@MistressJennie, I really like how your quilt top has turned out. It’s definitely recognizable as the quilt from the book. I bet Ada is going to LOVE it!

@EclecticDreamer, you seem to be flying through your quilt goals! Your block looks great! I know your unicorn block was from a Pat Sloan QAL, which has me wondering - are you going to make a pink quilt with various blocks or will the Pat Sloan block and this BOM be going to different quilts?

I nominate this Adori quilt block.

@AudiobookLover At this time I’m not planning to do the QAL. I liked the first block, but kinda meh on the rest of them. I’m thinking to do all my one-off blocks in pinks, and make a quilt at the end. I just picked up a bundle of pink and a bundle of grey at my guild meeting last week so might ease grey into it too. It wasn’t an intentional plan, just didn’t actually need the fat quarters I thought I needed, so they were right there, and now it’s a thing.

It’ll be fun to see what come up with!

Oooh, I love that one too!

I managed to layout my second Ghost quilt this afternoon, and get the rows pieced. It was amazing how much faster a 10 x 10 layout went, compared to Ada’s 13 x 13. I hope to get the second top done tomorrow and maybe even layout the third.

Also, the set of Letters and Numbers that my husband 3-d printed for me have been super helpful in keeping my rows from getting mixed up or turned around! So, so helpful when dealing with a pattern that has no pattern.

I have number and letter pins…and yes, they are super helpful! My set came with directional arrows as well…but, I sort of wish they were safety pins because sometimes they fall out!

I love all of the block nominations so far…I have been going through my old patterns when we used to do quilt block swaps…I have a few favorites that we might like! I have a lot of star patterns because that is what kbrison loved to receive!

Letter/number pins… so far I just use strips of paper and pins or clips. One of these days I’ll go all fancy haha.

As I was researching the quilt block that @Edel nominated, I discovered that the same pattern was offered for sale in a 1922 catalog by the Ladies Art Company (you could get a single pattern for 10 cents or 15 patterns for a dollar). I then found the actual quilt pattern along with the information that “The earliest appearance of this pattern would have been the 1897 catalog.”

I took a look through the 1922 catalog and have to admit, I was a little surprised to see so many familiar blocks. I know quilting has been around forever, but I never really gave any consideration to the quilt blocks. It makes me happy to know that these blocks have withstood the test of time and are just as popular now as they were over 100 years ago!

That’s really interesting and how great is it that they have been around for so long. Nothing new under the sun, I guess.

I’m just not feeling like tracking goals or playing along with BOMs’ etc. this year. But I am making quilty things.

@MistressJennie swapped me a beautiful quilt top that I have shown before. I got it quilted up yesterday and it is so warm and cozy. The backing and binding were from a friend’s friend’s mother’s fabric donation to our annual artisian craft fair. Perfect for this quilt top. About 60 x 54

And, included in that donation was this quilt top. I redid one block with hand written names in indelible ink and used the same fabrics as above for backing and binding. There was a bonus block I was able to include in the backing. I’ll donate it back to the fair for next year. About 56 x 42

OMG @marionberries, I’m so excited that you quilted it up! It looks so nice. It can be hard when you take an existing pattern/idea, modify it in size/shape AND color palette and hope it comes out like you imagined. I was going for warm, earthy, and cozy, but worried that the Earth toned palette really didn’t go with the modern color block/mid century minimalism aesthetic of the pattern. You really tied it all together!

My bingos that I’ve completed so far.

  1. Used fabric that I’ve had in stash for at least a year. I took this as a personal challenge and tried to find the oldest fabric that I bought from new (I have a collection of vintage sheets from the 60s/70s, I’m not counting them)

The yellow fabric, seashells, is over 25 years old. I used a backing fabric (and didn’t take pic) that is likely thirty years old :woman_shrugging:

These two quilted mugrugs were an experiment, I was trying some thin polyester wadding and some insulated curtain interlining, to see which would be nicer. I’m leaning towards the curtain stuff, but tbh, not much difference between the two.

Other bingos,
2. Comment on posts
3. Nominated a block
4. Currently working with 10" squares

The donated fabric was a perfect addition to your quilt top. How lucky. My SIL is trying to steal it for herself! Thank you so much.

Don’t forget, everyone, you don’t have to get a Bingo to win a prize. You can also win by earning 7 points throughout the quarter. One of the ways to earn points is by participating in the quarterly challenge (this was also one of the Bingo prompts).

As I was browsing the internet last night, I came across this post that’s filled with smaller quilting projects that would easily work for this quarter’s challenge to quilt something functional.

This morning, I came across another functional quilt project. I’d love to give this a try!

@marionberries, you did a lovely job finishing that quilt (and @MistressJennie, you did a lovely job creating the top)! You know it’s good if your SIL is trying to abscond with it! Nice job on the second quilt. I love how you used up all the blocks, the one on the back makes for a fun extra touch!

@Edel, what a fun use for your ‘vintage’ fabric! Don’t forget to submit your mug rugs as a quarterly challenge and so you can mark off one more Bingo square!

February Prompt:
Inspired by:
Summer, technology, or time

Hmm, I think that time prompt would be a fairly easy one to fulfill. So many projects are often inspired by the amount of time it will take to make them. Also, while the prompt ‘summer’ was inspired by the season, it is also my name. So, if that helps in any way, feel free to use it. Remember, these prompts are for fun, so you’re welcome to get creative with them!

February BOM:

or

David & Goliath Quilt Block - nominated by @EclecticDreamer
David & Goliath Block with corner arrows

Don’t forget, you have the option of creating the specific BOM featured for each month or submitting a similar looking block that is created more within your skill level or finishes at your preferred size.

Quarter 1 Challenge
(January 1 - March 31)

Quilt something functional.

You could just make a quilt for your bed, after all such a quilt would be quite functional. Or, you make a quilted plastic bag holder like this one @jellybean made for her sister. So long as it serves a functional purpose (beyond being gazed upon and admired), you can submit it for this challenge!

Goal List:
Feel free to add any additional goals to your goal list, or if you haven’t already, you can still share your first quarter goals with us. You can earn a point for every goal you share and complete! Plus, this quarter, you can also earn an extra point just by sharing your goal list!
