Rainbow Reading Reading Rainbow Blanket

The name of this blanket has multiple meanings- A) it’s a rainbow color scheme, B) it’s the perfect size to cover me when I lay on the couch to read and C) the colors go from dark on the edge to light in the middle, and then from light back to dark again (hence the double name). It sort of pays homage to Reading Rainbow, but honestly, I have never seen an episode (I was in high school when it first aired), so that’s why it’s the second part of the name.

I made most of the squares at school during multiple days of testing (we are not allowed to grade papers and must be actively monitoring, but I could make a square while I walked around). I also made some during crochet club, staff meetings, professional development, and some outside of school. All of the yarn was donated to crochet club (this didn’t even make a dent in the stash), and one of my students picked out all of the colors (with occasional guidance from me). I was thinking I might give it to her when it was done, but once I started to put it together, I fell in love with it, and it took me almost 60 hours to make, so I decided that I should keep it as a reward for surviving my 30th year of teaching middle school

It looks misshapen in the photo, but it is perfectly rectangular in real life!

Amazing! I wish I were snuggled under it now (and it’s 87F at 9 p.m., so that’s saying something).

What a great way to keep your hands busy while monitoring during testing - you got two things done at once and ended up with something functional and something that you love. That’s an all around win! Also, congratulations on 30 years!!

Thanks, everyone! It is pretty snuggly, and if I didn’t need to give it a wash first, I would be using it tonight, because it’s too hot to comfortably sleep, but just a bit too cold with the AC on

Congratulations on this charming and cozy quilt AND on 30 years of doing The Good Work: teaching. It takes a special countenance and heart to spend that much time with middle schoolers!

A rainbow blanket really helps elevate our spirits!

Congrats on 30 years, my friend! You opened my eyes to the challenges teachers face and it has been a privilege to support you and other teachers through Donors Choose. Thank you, Cindy…and yes, you deserve this beautiful handmade blanket!

Thank you! And, honestly, I can’t believe it’s actually been 30 years. When I started, I remember saying that I would be lucky if I made it through 10

And, @AIMR, thank you so much for supporting my classroom. We use those stools almost every day! I wouldn’t have gotten them without your help

Wow! Thank you!

Thanks, everyone! And, I did spend 2 years as an elementary science specialist, but was happy to return to middle school. They are awkward, obnoxious, funny, sweet, irritating, and trying to find their place in the world. One thing I can say about teaching middle school is that it’s never boring (except for staff meetings)! It’s so fun to see how much they change during middle school, and even more when they come back for their Senior Walk before they graduate!
