I fell for this paper pieced raven block on Etsy. I love the results of paper piecing, but I struggle with it due to dyslexia. It’s fun though, each new mistake, or old repeated mistake, gives me a chuckle.
The pattern comes with different colorways, right or left-facing birds, and sizes. I am going for the 10-inch and have a quilt planned around bird blocks.
Oh gosh, that’s stunning. The colours are amazing! I saw they have a magpie block as well, so very tempting. The eye looks quite fussy, how small is that square? Doing those teeny wee pieces is such a challenge, all the seam allowances, ugh. Does the pattern give good pressing instructions for keeping that bulk down? I really like paper piecing, unlike knitting it just works for my brain.
The eye was easy with the PP. No instructions on pressing. With PP all the seams get pressed one way, it’s only when you put the bigger sections together do you have a choice. I pressed the long connecting seams open.
It’s a fun block and I am doing a variation for a red winged black bird.
Your block looks great! I really like the way that purple pops against the black. I’m looking forward to seeing your entire flock of birds quilt!
@Magpie, if you ever need help flattening seams, there’s a product by Acorn called Easy Press Fabric Treatment. You apply it to the seams, then iron them down and they come out pretty darn flat!
A tailors block can also help. You press the seam and then hold the piece of wood over the seam for a moment until it cools a bit and the seam lays flatter. I just use a piece of 2 x 2 I scavenged from the basement and sanded down the edges.
