Recommended X-stitch Design program

I’m looking for recommendations for an app or site for generating cross stitch patterns. Specifically for words in various alphabets, but would probably enjoy turning images into patterns, as well. I found a list on Google, of course, but would appreciate it if anyone has one (or more) they have used or know someone who has used. THANKS!

I’m assuming Stitch Fiddle isn’t working for what you need?

I have no idea. I have never used anything for this at all. Do you recommend it?

So I personally use winstitch but that’s all I know. I don’t cross-stitch much. I have made really small ones but it’s just not very interesting for me personally. I just make cross stitch patterns for my friend mostly. Lol. I can show you some samples if you want.

I’d appreciate that, THANKS!

Stitch Fiddle is a site where you can upload an image, and it will generate a cross stitch, knitting, or crochet pattern from it. I used it to make my Haunted Mansion afghan for a friend who got married. You tell it how big you want the pattern to become, and what craft you’re doing. I believe I had set my afghan to a max of 175 x 185 stitches, which gave me a lot of grace in the curves on the pattern, but was probably too big of an overall design as it took me ages! But you can upload the image and reset the parameters, till you get what you like. You would have to use a font you have, in the image you’re uploading, and fiddle around with it.

Here’s the afghan as reference:

And the image as I uploaded it:

Oh! That sounds cool. Does it have the ability to generate a pattern of text? Like, can I type something in, select a typeface, and have it spit out a pattern?

It’s been years since I used it, but I don’t think so. That’s why I said you’d have to use a font on your own computer, and just upload the image.

I recommend stitch fiddle (like Mistress Jennie) or www.pic2pat.com, I’ve had great success with both

THANKS everyone for helping! You’ve helped me understand that I think that I have asked the wrong question. What I want to create is something that looks somewhat like a traditional sampler, with a phrase rather than an alphabet and that has some kind of classic, but possibly at least semi-elaborate, border.

What I should have asked about was: Is there an app or site that I can type a phrase, select a font, select a border to go around it and it will generate a pattern for me.

It sounds like I may have to find collection of fonts and a collection of borders and do the work of making them a pattern myself on grid paper. :sob: But first, I’m off to ask the internet the new question!

I know there are books of just classic quilt blocks, so I’m assuming there are books that are just of embroidery alphabets, and embroidery borders/motifs. Maybe search one out, old school style? You might even be able to find one digitally, or through an inter-library loan…

That is what I have done. I remembered from many years ago that there was an online source with digitized pages from various antique and vintage patterns, but I haven’t found it again. I was hoping that in the last decade or so, someone had made an app to do this, but if they have they are making sure it’s not easy to find.
