Robe [WIP]

Ok! Started…the learning and deciding phase of this next project.

Concepts:

  1. It’s just an extra long shirt, that’s a tad bigger. So I could always up my shirt patter by two, and modify each part…easy peasy, macaroni and cheesy.
  2. Collar, per #2’s video…I think I like that idea…So let me look over my shirt pattern, and see if I can visualize that happening…Ooooooooh! I got the perfect fabric to use for the inside collar.…The hamster is running on that wheel…Let’s go have a look-see.

Problems:

  1. I forgot which size I make. So it doesn’t have a pattern for two sizes larger, Which means I’ll have to freehand this. Not a problem, I’ve done enough to know how to accomplish that.
  2. Parchment paper isn’t large enough. Will have to either purchase some wrapping paper, or I could tape it…Which, I don’t think I have enough tape for the job anyway. So maybe buy some wrapping paper…Although, there’s really no way to reliably draw on this fabric. So if I pin the parchment paper to the fabric, then I could just add a second piece of parchment paper. Will have to see when it comes time to actually put this to practice.

Started:

I went with the third video. I have it cut out, next part that I’ll do will be changing the arm holes. That will take quite a bit of brain power to pull off, so I’m putting it off til I’m ready. Maybe tomorrow, since I forgot I wouldn’t be doing anything tomorrow, O_o.

Videos: (When I watch a vid, I’ll place it here if I think it’s interesting)

  1. MAKING A ROBE (with grandma) | Easy DIY Robe!
  2. Robe Sewing Pattern Tutorial (No separate pieces for the arms).
  3. DIY Fleece Robe / Home Bathrobe without pattern. Easy Video Tutorial (Ooh! This one really looks promising).

Now this. This is where having a drawing tablet really shines, heh.

I really think I can do this. Now the next steps of the thinking process. Do I want interfacing added to the collar? And if so…How…would…that…work? O_o.

Pre-Upates:

  1. Resized the image, as it was way too big, O_o.
  2. Added a bit for the collar with stay stitching so I would have the seam allowance to sew it onto the back of the robe. ( Is adding that piece really that important? Yeah! Yeah! It’s kind of needed).

If I fold over the collar, and sew the inside collar under the fold, I think I could get away with not interfacing it. (Ooh! The black thread would show up like a sore thumb on this white.. May just have to go all the way around with the white and grab some white thread. I think that’s my only option)

Alright! Next step, I removed an inch from the bottom of the sleeve.

Now onto the sleeves.

  1. They don’t need the curve to be lopsided like with the shirt pattern, so I took that out. Also, since I only removed fabric from the lower part, I extended the sleeve only in that area.
  2. The sleeve can be straighter, so I took out some of the curve, and matched the drawing to the length of the sleeve holes on the front and back pieces.

And what the new design looks like in relation to my shirt patterns sleeve. (Made like this as I can lengthen the sleeve at will, so I don’t need the full length, and thus able to use as little parchment paper as possible).

And lastly. I trace out the rest of the patterns, so if I don’t like something after making it, I’ll have the pattern to adjust for the next one I may make.

You wouldn’t even need a pattern if you made your robe using basic kimono techniques of using all rectangles.

Simple robe, no pattern needed

I’ll have to check that…I’m ticked. I’m flabbergasted. I sewed the last piece on with the seam allowance on the wrong side…Ooooooooh, it’s one of the long sides, too. Holy mackeral, this is going to take a loooooooong time to take out. AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

Took me a little over or under an hour…O_o. Not too bad. These memory issues are turning me into a speedy seam ripper, :no_mouth:.

There! Now I only have the cuffs, collar, base and belt to do. (You can see by my expression I’m just a tad aggravated, heh).

Insert my best impersonation of Christopher Lambert’s laugh here, heh!

Now, the belt’s not pretty, but meh. It works, heh.
