A couple of years ago, I went to the local botanic garden’s Night Lights event, and they had s’mores kits you could buy. A little bag contained the ingredients for 1 s’more, and they were about $8 each! But, it was a good idea
I bought some treat bags and the ingredients and was able to make 24 bags. I used a package of Hershey’s chocolate bars as my limiting factor- six bars with 4 sections each. It was almost a whole box of graham crackers, and a little over 1/2 bag of marshmallows.
The treat bags came with twist ties, and I have them in a fridge bin. I’m keeping them in the fridge for 2 reasons: 1) Out of sight, out of mind, and 2) It’s been so hot and I don’t have AC in the entire house.
I also figured these would help with portion control. Instead of eating 4 at a time because the candy bar was already open, I can limit myself to 1 (okay, maybe 2). I tallied the calories: 65 calories for the graham crackers, 18 for the marshmallow, and 53 for the chocolate, for a total of 136 calories.
This is brilliant! I would just keep making and eating these until all the ingredients were gone. Not all at once, mind you, but by the end of the day, I’d be wondering where all of the s’mores stuff went. This is a great idea for portion control.
And, I like the idea of selling them at a venue at which this would be appropriate. $8 seems a bit on the steep side, though. I don’t think one would sell very many at that price.
I love this idea! We are doing a charity bake sale at work and I am going to make some of these and add instructions to microwave. I know I would grab them up! Thanks for the idea!
The package of chocolate bars actually had 4 methods- microwave, oven, campfire, and grill (I think). I might use my toaster oven to brown up the marshmallow. I was planning to use a skewer and rotate it under the coils for even toastiness, but the package says to put it on the layered graham cracker and chocolate, then bake at 350 F until browned, then top with the second graham cracker.
These would be great for a bake sale! I was planning on making a cute bag toppers, but since they are just for me, it would have been time & materials wasted. But, a topper is a handy spot for microwave directions, plus you could staple it on, which would close up the bag.
That sounds easier than my skewer idea! It doesn’t really need to be toasted on all sides. I could cut the marshmallow in half to get more toastiness…hmmm… I feel like I need to try this!
I typically do mine in the toaster oven as well. I recently started putting the chocolate in the oven as well to get it nice and melty. The only problem that I run into is that sometimes the graham cracker will start to burn when I try to get the marshmallow too brown (in which case, I just scoot it onto a new graham cracker when I pull it out).
I think I tried in the microwave a long time ago, but the negative to that is that the marshmallow doesn’t brown.
Oh, and if you want to make them extra tasty, you should try the Hershey’s with caramel. I love these chocolate bars in particular because they taste just like how I always imagine a chocolate bar with caramel in the middle should taste (which is nice, because I’ve found most others to be pretty disappointing). Just know that the ‘full size’ is the size of one graham cracker half - perfect for s’mores, but not the size I imagine when I read ‘full size.’
I was worried that the graham cracker might burn, so that’s a good solution!
I haven’t seen those caramel filled Hershey bars before! I’ll have to look the next time I’m in the store (they already had the Halloween candy out!!!).
Have you seen the video of someone taking a Reese’s peanut butter cup (stuck on a skewer) and dunking it into marshmallow Fluff and then toasting it before putting it on the graham crackers? It looks delicious! Between that and those caramel Hershey’s bars, I feel like I need to test out some s’mores variations!
For inside, you can use a votive candle or one of those flame in a can things they use for a hot buffet. I have used candles to make smores with my kids when we needed a rainy day activity when we lived off grid.
Good idea! I don’t have a grill, so the toaster oven seemed like the best option. They sell s’mores roasters online for about $30, and I was tempted, but your idea is a lot more affordable
And, I went to a cookout today and she forgot to get s’mores fixings, so I brought mine. They were a hit! We talked about different variations, and someone mentioned savory s’mores. Someone tried one with cheese (Brie and cheddar), cherry tomatoes, and pepperoni, while someone else tried Brie with fresh basil. Both were put between Triscuits, and both were declared delicious!
Now that I think about it, I’m tempted to get a s’mores roaster so I can set up a s’mores bar. But, that’s a future idea, not for now
