I needed some inspiration to get back into thinking upon weaving, and jumped on the opportunity to take Beth Ross Johnson’s Sashiko-ori workshop with our local Handweavers’ guild!
We used (6-shaft) floor looms and her warp pattern to weave a plainweave background base with supplemental warp threading to mimic sashiko embroidery style. It was actually really cool! (and now I think I need a loom with more harnesses )
And some closeups. (Once I figured out how the supplemental warp worked, and after I experimented with some different patterns and treadling, I also started playing around with increasing and decreasing some of the patterns to create an illusion of pulsing or waves or something. I’m not sure the instructor liked some of the long threads I ended up having hanging out there )
@Magpie Thank you! I think those wonky rectangles (with their long, un-fixed threads) are what scared the instrcutor, haha!
@photojenn the supplemental warp was just wound with the rest of it. Basically, the pattern was a simple 1234 threading but with the thicker white yarn popping in on either shaft 5 or 6 in between every four heddles, and surrounded by 12 on one side and 34 on the other… hopefully that makes sense; I am not a super experienced weaver, and I’d have to double check but I believe there were two 5’s in a row and two 6’s in a row. So the threading was like 1234 5 1212 6 3434 6 1212 5 3434 5 etc.
edit to add that Beth has a book which (I think) is getting close to being published, which I understand to be all different variations on these sashiko style warps!
